Slow file transfer on DNS-321

I spent the last hour searching the forums for solutions to this, as it seems others have the same problem, but I am just not seeing any clear solution, so thought I would ask for some direction -- even if to point me to a thread that has specific suggestions for improving transfer performance.  The problems is that I am only getting about 3 MBps file transfer rates over a wired connection (less on wireless), and that seems quite a bit slower than other folks.  Here is my hardware setup:

DNS-321 with firmware v. 1.03, drives are running as separate drives, no raid or anything
DIR-655 with firmware v. 1.34NA
Intel 6300 NIC in Thinkpad laptop (network says it is connecting at 1 Gbps)
Windows 7 Pro
I also have a couple of XP machines with different hardware, and they are also slow.

Appreciate any advice.

3 Mbps or less on 1Gbps wired connection, maybe 1.5 Mbps or less on 300 Mbps wireless connection.

Oh, it also seems to run faster with jumbo frames turned off, for whatever reason.

Funny thing, I have a similar issue.  For reasons I don't understand, jumbo frames run slower here as well, but that wasn't always the case.  However, I get 13-14mbytes/sec from the DNS-323, and a lot faster response from my Synology DNS.  I've put aside the jumbo frames for now...

Using default configuration, I got about 14.2 MBps with DNS-321 on gigabyte network.  On attached computers, I then set jumbo frames as high as they could go (7000 on Realtek card, 9000 on Marvell controller). On the DNS-321, I set network speed to 1000 Mbps rather than auto, and boosted jumbo frames to 9000.  Small files now go at around 21 MBps, and I got a large file transfer (100 GB) averaging at 18.9 MBps.  Router is DIR-825. NAS and router have most recent firmware. Internal drives in controller configured as JBOD.

Interesting settings... seems different than most I have read.  Great transfer speeds!  Maybe I will do a little tinkering...  Thanks!

I take it you have EXT2 formatted drives as well.  You see this on many threads, people tossing speeds around and system settings but you almost never hear about the hard drive format which is, in my opinion, the largest factor for those high speeds.  I will admit, 18 MBps average is very good for this NAS.

One thing people have to understand is EXT2 formatted drives will transfer data faster than EXT3 however EXT2 is less safe as EXT3.

I chose EXT3 for reliability, since there is very few options for repairing a corrupt filesystem on the NAS.

I agree 100%.  I have tested EXT2 and it is faster but like GRJ I'm a fan of keeping my data out of the corruption state.  And like GRJ's tagline, better backup any data you deem important that you cannot afford to lose because it will happen and your data will be gone the next time you blink.
