UGH 825 won't find the internet.
« on: June 10, 2010, 03:13:27 PM »

1.  Win 7 Home premium, 3gb RAM, 1TB total disk space. My internet service is Clearwire.com. My old router is a Hawking 9249 the replacement is the DIR 825.  I followed the set up instructions and ran into a problem.  I have an internal IP for the network and it seems to work.  The external IP never gets set or detected, it is static.  So I am unable to reach the internet from any of the three computers on my net. 1 MAC mini intel duo core, 1 Linux box running mint.  What have I done wrong in the set up and how do I fix it.  Contacted the Internet provider tech support and their end is working just fine in fact I can direct connect any of the computers to the modem and reach the net, hook in the router and nothing. They suggested I contact D-Link.  I am running hard wired. So for now the hawking is online.

You mention that your external IP address is static.  Have you set the 825's Internet WAN setting to "Static" on the manual setup/Internet page?  And then entered the static IP address, Subnet, DNS address(es), etc. in the boxes below that?

Also, how did you set up your computers when you connected them directly to the modem?  Are they normally set to run dynamic ip addresses on the local network, and you reset them to static for connection to the modem?  Or do you always run static on the LAN as well?

I have a Static IP from the ISP, and yes I followed the directions for setting it up.  The other computers connect via the router to the modem, they are each assigned an address on the network and in the past have had no problems.  I tried setting the router up using both dynamic and static with both attempts failing.

For static IP address Internet access service, you ISP must supply:

IP address for WAN
Subnet mask
DNS Server IP address 1
DNS Server IP address 2.

Then, on you LAN part of the router, you need to set up an IP address within a private IP address range (an IP address scheme which will not route out onto the Internet.)  This is usually a 192.168.xxx.yyy or 10.xxx.yyy.zzz series.

Also, recent firmware changes may an "Advanced DNS" configuration.  This should be turned off as it has been noted that this can cause access problems from the LAN computers.

I have the info from the ISP and have assigned internal addresses like I did with the  Hawking 9249 ( using the scheme for the D-Link) but I was not aware of the Advanced DNS issue and I do have it activated.  I'll try again with it off.  Lone TUX and I do have a linux box on the network.
