accessing media files noob
« on: June 11, 2010, 01:51:02 AM »

I think I have everything set up correctly on NAS. upnp enabled. Itunes firefly runnibg. 1.08 installed. When I go to my NAS I can see my folders but can only see pics. When I click on some other media (mpeg, avi) either it tries to connect for 10 min or it says cannot find page Am I supposed to configure Itunes or wmp? are the ftp links supossed to open these programs? Sorry if these are dumb questions but I have never dealt with an ftp server before.

Hi

It sounds like you might be trying to open your media files through FTP inside your network. You don't actually need to do that, you can access your files in Windows by browsing the network, or navigating directly to your shares...

What i'm really trying to do is to access my ftp files over the internet so I can eventually tell grandma and the aunts how to see home videos of the grandkids. Pics are fine. They automatically open when clicked on through internet explorer, but I just need an easy way to tell them to see the video files. Thanks

Oh OK - why didn't you say that before ;)

I've had that issue too with mp3 files. The only way I found to solve that is to use a proper FTP application like FileZilla or use Windows explorer. Have you tried to do it using a different browser like Chrome, Firefox etc? That might be a more suitable solution here.

It would be a nice feature to have a web application running on the NAS, accessible externally, which can showcase selected media files... I expect gunrunnerjohn is going to say the Synology NAS has that...?

Correct, it does indeed. :D

The DNS-323 is fine for what it does, but it doesn't compare to the higher end NAS boxes.  Note that it also costs less than half of what they do. :)

With some effort, it is possible to hack the NAS in to acting as a web server to showcase your photos.

I've actually tried this using third party (and unsupported) sofware - Fonz Funplug, its included web server and a program called Jalbum to generate a gallery consisting of some pretty HTML pages, javascript effects and thumbnails - which I then just copied to the NAS's web directory to serve.

Correct, you don't have to hack the Synology. :D

And the Synology most likely generates the thumbnails etc automatically/much easier.

I notice the Synology DS210J is out now...

Yep, it sure does. :D

They have a whole line of models, but most of them run the same firmware version with the same capabilities.  Some have eSATA ports and the like, mine doesn't have those.  However, it does seamlessly connect multiple USB drives and even automate the backup of folders on a schedule.  The speed of the backup is limited by the USB 2.0 drive, normally about 20-25mbytes/sec transfer speed.  The print server supports multiple USB printers, and of course it supports USB monitoring.  Since it only has three USB ports, they have thoughtfully provided seamless USB hub support, so you can connect about as many USB devices as you like.  I have two USB disks, a printer, and a UPS connected to a hub, and I still have two free USB ports. :)
