Cant connect to my cable modem
« on: June 11, 2010, 07:29:22 PM »

I have just purchased the DIR-825 router and have been through the setup a few times now and it is not requesting an IP address from my cable modem and the link light never comes on.  I have plugged the cable modem directly into my computer and it works fine.  The router is a B1 with 2.03NA firmware.  What can I do to make it connect?
thanks,

You will need to reset your cable modem for it to recognize your router. Most ISPs and/or cable modems remember the MAC address of the device that you registered when you start using the service. In most cases, power cycling the modem (disconnect the power, leave it off for 2-3 minutes, and then turn it back on) should resolve the problem. Of course, this will only work if your cable modem is not powered by a backup battery, in which case you might need to disconnect the battery too. In rare situation, you may need to call your ISP to register the right MAC address. Hope this helps.

Tried this and still nothing.  I also had comcast reset my router remotely just in case it had an internal battery.  Any other ideas?

you might want to make sure your DLink is set up for DHCP, or in other words, make sure it's not set to a static IP address.

Not sure where you're located, but I'm using Comcast here with my DIR-825 and it works great.  The Comcast Modem is set to be a DHCP server starting at 10.1.10.100 and up.  I have my DIR-825 set to a static IP address of 10.1.10.80 with the default gateway set to 10.1.10.1  If you don't know the DNS server IP's for your area for Comcast, you can use OpenDNS.org IP numbers, they work fine.
