problem with firmware 1.08 connecting to FTP
« on: June 12, 2010, 09:59:31 PM »

I have a problem, not sure if this is the right place to ans my question as i already search the everywhere for the past few day before i decide to register an account to post my question.

My friend using 1.07 and he have no problem with his FTP. But when he help me to configure my router and nas, he just can't connect from outside with my 1.08 firmware. The different between the 2 firmware is mine got this "Allow SSL/TLS connection only" option in FTP server tab, but not in 1.07. and under FTP server status my "SSL/TLS connection" is always set to "yes". So my fren suspect this is the problem why i cant connect from outside my network and advise me to downgrade to 1.07. but I still hope i can get some ans here if it is really the 1.08 that are having this problem or i have miss out anything. BTW i am using  DSL-2640T router. Pls help.... thanks a million....

If he can connect from the inside, but not the outside, the problem is not related to the "allow SSL/TLS connection" setting.

There are several other possible problem areas ...

- if you are using static ip addressing make sure there is a default gateway entry
- if you are using a non standard port make sure that you are not trying to use passive ftp
- make sure the port forwarding and access rules in the router are set correctly
- make sure that your ISP does not block access on the port you are trying to use
- make sure that the connection is not blocked by the firewall at the client side

Yes i have my default gateway enter
- if you are using a non standard port make sure that you are not trying to use passive ftp
I am using standard port, but where can i find the passive ftp mode?(21)
- make sure the port forwarding and access rules in the router are set correctly
yes i have check my access rules.
- make sure that your ISP does not block access on the port you are trying to use
My fren is also using the same ISP.
- make sure that the connection is not blocked by the firewall at the client side
I have turn off my firewall

I will try to print screen my setting so you can help to see wat i have miss out. Thank again for your help.

in the option settings for whatever ftp client you are attempting to use
My fren is also using the same ISP
is he using the same port?

I don't think we're talking about the same firewall - you can't just turn off the firewall in a NAT router.

Hi there,
I saw the Passive Mode in my dns 323 ftp server setting. so which one i should use. there are 3 option
1) Use the default port range (55536-55663)
2) Use the following port range: i put 10050 to 10099
3) Report external IP in Passive mode

I have try 1 and 2, but still cant works. I have also port forward 21 and 10050 to 10099 for my router.

just to make sure all my setting is correct. thanks alot.

You need to use the third option and probably configure a dynamic DNS updater so that the DNS-323 knows the external IP address.  I know FTP didn't work for me until I did that.

This is akin to asking should I use IE8 or Firefox, should I use Verizon or Sprint, should I use Symantec or McAfee.

There are valid reasons to use both active & passive ftp, neither one is inherently better, one may be a more appropriate choice than the other given the circumstances at the time, and when those circumstances change, the other may be more appropriate.

More importantly - as of firmware ver 1.08 - both work equally well, provided the circumstances allow, and they are properly configured (prior to fw 1.08, the passive firmware implementation of the DNS-323 was flawed).

I just wan to know which option is commonly use. I am not trying to ask which setting is better. If i am asking which setting is better, then your example of IE8 or firefox will be vaild. I just wan to know wat i need to check to get my nas working. I actually don't no wat i am doing, just follow instruction and hope can see it works. My question may sound not logic to you. But I am just trying to explain and show wat i noe so ppl here can guide me and assist me.

Hi All,

Finally i manage to connect my FTP from outside. So just to share what i have last done to get it working.

1) i have set my ftp server setting under passive mode, "Use the default port range (55536-55663)"
2) port forward 20 and 21, and also port 55536 - 55663
3) update dlink router firmware!!! (i suspect this is the problem with the older firmware)
4) ping host to make sure my ip address is auto update
5) try not to ftp host name within your network, i keep using ftp://host.dyndns.org within my network and it doesn't work till i try from outside.

lastly i would like to thanks all senior member for your valuable info.  :)

This doesn't work because your router does not support loopback.

Also you are configured for passive ftp - which your friend with fw 1.07 cannot run due to a broken implementation which was fixed in the 1.08 release.
