Can't upgrade firmware from 1.32NA to 1.33NA or 1.34NA
« on: June 28, 2010, 10:24:43 AM »

I've been getting intermittently disconnected, so I decided to upgrade the firmware. Current is 1.32NA. I first tried to update to 1.34NA, but even though the bin file was uploaded & seemed to be processed, the firmware version stayed at 1.32NA. I then tried first upgrading to 1.33NA, same thing.

Any ideas?

There are several postings on this.  Best thing to try is to back up your current configuration.  Reset the router to Factory Defaults and then do the firmware upgrade.  After the upgrade is done restore your Config file.

Thanks, I searched for a bit but didn't find a good post.
I will try the reset/upgrade/reload, after the Brazil/Chile game.

Thanks for the advice!

Can I skip directly to 1.34NA, or do I have to do 1.33NA first?

Resetting my router to factory settings, upgrading the firmware, then restoring the configuration file worked for me. I was able to upgrade from 1.32NA straight to 1.34NA.

I've done the same ting. I have version 1.21, then I uploaded the latest firmware, and the interface still reports version 1.21.  The thing that would interest me most (and strangely, nobody seems to ask) just what happened when I uploaded the latest firmware?  Did it take?  There wasn't an indication of any error during the process. The only strange thing is that is reports version 1.21. So what happened?  Was it indeed flashed with the latest version?  Is it imperative that I reset to factory settings and re-flash?

Having gone through this myself, I can honestly say "Yes you must, and you will be rewarded for the extra minute or two of wait time".

Make sure you back-up your settings, then reset the router, followed by flashing with the latest and greatest, then restore your settings.

I can tell you that my router was resetting itself every couple of hours and when it didn't, I had to power-cycle it at least once every 24 hours or my wired connections would hang.  After upgrading to 1.34, the router has been up for 14 days, 19 hours, 43 minutes and 19 seconds without any problems.  This firmware version MAY be a keeper.

Fixed my problem where ustech@... was unable.   IN fact them seemed upset that I would want to upgrade the firmware.

No matter what I do (I've tried everything listed here), I have a router that wont accurately display its current firmware (after about 8 manual and software Resets, it still claims to be v1.34NA), and will not accept ANY of the 3 different settings files made in the past 10 months.

How can this be?  (I have hardware version A3 and started from firmware v1.21)

OK, I managed to get things going again, but in a totally ad hoc fashion.  As others have said here and elsewhere, this is no way to roll out a firmware update across 4 different hardware versions of a critical piece of kit!  I was caught in an update loop: updated firmware which wouldn't accept my just-saved settings and also wouldn't allow a downgrade.  What to do?  Taking advice from a different thread I:
1. removed AC power for at least a minute
2. while that counted down, I pressed the hardware reset for about 30secs (who knows if that mattered?)
3. unplugged all cabling, including internet from my cable modem, leaving my computer's ethernet in port 1 (an old requirement on old hardware)
4. applied AC power again.  This always allowed me to access the 655 as admin, but nothing removed firmware 1.34NA.  Apparently its permanent, at least until the next update(?).  But I could not restore my most recent settings file (or any other settings file for that matter).  Downgrading was not permitted (I came from 1.21) really leaving me in the lurch about what to do next.  I was left with a basic default routing table that at least allowed me access to the internet.

Then, after reading others' experiences, and without being sure what did what, I did an additional factory restore from the admin page, and began yet another attempt at loading settings.  My browser (Safari) spun its wheels for awhile, and after say 4 minutes(?) I manually stopped the browser-loading and was faced with the login page.  The only difference was, this one didn't accept the usual default of no password.  And when I typed in my password, hitting the Enter key did NOT work (as it always had in the past).  Only when I mouse-clicked the OK button was I (finally) able to confirm that I had indeed restored my router settings with the new firmware on an A3-version of the 655.  But upon replugging my modem into the WAN port, I still couldn't connect to the internet.  The last hurdle (for me anyway) was to reboot the modem (perhaps releasing the ip would've worked too?).

At last, after an hour and change of troubleshooting, I was back to where I started.  Its been about 14 hours and no glitches or surprises yet.  But left with a bad taste in my mouth.

Hope this helps somebody...and thanks to all who contributed their experiences.  It definitely kept me from giving up.  D-Link, do your homework and be sure these updates work in the usual fashion and not by a technique out of the distant past!

If you were trying to restore a config file that was saved when you were at 1.21 than there have been issues with doing this.  Mostly due to the Kernel change in the 1.3X firmwares.  You shouldn't have any problem restoring 1.3X saved configs when flashing to another 1.3X firmware version.
