Hi all,

Just bought the DIR-655 yesterday and the wired performance has been great but I've been having a major issue with wireless.

Whenever I try to transfer a large file (100mb+) across the network the wireless connection on my laptop immediately hangs, this also happens when downloading anything from the internet. The laptop takes a minute or so to recover and it eventually reconnects. During that period no wireless networks are available at all. This is pretty much unacceptable and it's disappointing to see so many people having similar issues.

I bought the router hoping to utilize the wireless N functionality with the new Xbox 360 so I'm hoping the issue can be fixed.

Here is what I've tried so far:

  • I updated the router's firmware to 1.34NA with no change.
  • Turned off SecureSpot, no change.
  • Disabled QoS and WAN traffic shaping, no change.
  • Tried a number of tweaks listed in this thread with no change: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=13623.0

"1.) Turned off WISH, 2.) DISABLED the auto channel scan in the wireless setup, 3.) Set a specific wireless channel (right now on channel 1), and turned down my channel with to 20Mhz (I read somewhere on some other side that doing this seemed to give better performance on some wireless devices, while could affect others negatively)."
  • Disabled IPv6 on all connected devices, no change.

Here is a log of what happens when I try to transfer a file with the router set to all default options on 1.34NA (except for SecureSpot) and IPv6 enabled:

I have two Windows 7 PCs on the wired network and one Windows 7 laptop wireless. I currently have the wireless network set for 300mbps connection as laid out in the sticky.

Another thing I could check is rts and fragmentation thresholds but I'm not really sure where to go with that.

My router is currently set to all default settings and any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried transferring wired to your laptop?
This is to verify that the tranfer will take place if allowed to do so.

To me it sounds like a problem with the wireless adapter on the laptop (latest drivers?)
or a problem with the radio on the DIR-655 (to me, unlikely).

Also, try removing the 300 Mps, and talk wireless G. It may be a protocol thing.

You have tried everything I would have suggested, otherwise.

Hey bud,

Thanks for the tips. Locking it down to wireless G appears to have solved the issue.

Windows Update says the card on the laptop has the latest drivers but I'll do a little digging. If I can't get it going on N I can always wire the Xbox.

For drivers, go to the manufacturer's website, don't trust Windows Update.

Actually, scratch that.

I transferred a few gigs of files without any issue, then I decided to reboot the laptop and try again. It's back to doing the same thing now, immediate loss of connection when the transfer starts. No changes to the router.

It's a MSI GX630-028US laptop, running a 802.11bgn 1T2R Mini Card Wireless Adapter by Ralink. Appears to have the latest drivers.

So what did the wireless card connect at? 300 Mps or 54 Mps?
It sounds to me like it connected back at the 300 Mps after reboot.

Also, does your wireless card support 300 Mps?
With the quick search of your card I saw some of them are rated at only 150 Mps.
I think anything above 54 Mps is "n", but I'm not sure.
You might be having a weird buffering problem.

Check your Device Manager settings.
Change the channel width from 20/40 (or Auto) to just 20. This should slow the connection down to less than 150Mps (mine was around 65 Mps).
Check flow control and other settings. I'm not well versed in this area, but twiddle with the settings a little.
Change 1 setting, reboot and see what happens.

First turn IPV6 off (Toredo)
Then use WPA2 and AES for N use 40MHz bandwith.
Don't use auto functions.

Dynamic Fragmentation  TURN OFF
This option should be enabled when you have a slow Internet uplink. It helps to reduce the impact that large low priority network packets can have on more urgent ones by breaking the large packets into several smaller packets.

Extra Wireless Protection  TURN OFF
Extra protection for neighboring 11b wireless networks. Turn this option off to reduce the adverse effect of legacy wireless networks on 802.11ng performance. This option is available only when 802.11 Mode is set to an 11n Onlyoption.

Try this settings

Thanks for the tips guys.

Tried the above, still no dice.

It appears to be some sort of issue with either the wireless card on the laptop, something else on the laptop, or Windows 7. I only disabled IPv6 via the properties window in device manager and didn't do all the registry stuff to really get rid of it. Don't really feel like messing with all of that, especially if I'd have to do it on every PC on the network.

As I'm typing this I'm downloading a game off of Steam on the laptop at about 1-2 mbps on the wireless connection. There is just something about transferring files between computers over the wireless connection that instantly kills the laptop's wireless connection. To double check I plugged the laptop into the wired network and was able to transfer stuff with no issues at full speed.

Thanks again, I'm just going to roll like this for now.

Well... I still couldn't leave it alone. But I think I may have fixed it.

I finally looked at the event viewer for the laptop (should have done it sooner) and noticed event ID 2017 errors when I was transferring files.

I googled it and came up with this thread: http://www.vistax64.com/vista-networking-sharing/214686-event-id-2017-2021-a-2.html

I found this suggestion, applied it, and it seems to have fixed the issue:

Quote
Try this.

In:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer
\Parameters

Set the 'Size' value to 3

I tried several file transfers, rebooted the laptop a few times, and it didn't fail once.
