Wireless printing help
« on: July 05, 2010, 07:42:42 AM »

Hey guys, new to the forum and a complete tech novice.  I have the dir-655 A2 FW 1.34NA setup as a wireless router for my laptop.  I'm trying to print wirelessly to my samsung 2525w printer with no luck.  Using the software that came with the printer, the setup SEEMS easy.  It finds the network and APPEARS to connect the printer wirelessly to the network.  However when i send a print job to the printer, the status of the printer comes up as offline...I have to power it down/up to get it to print the job.  Then if i continue to to print within a short period of time, say 15-20 minutes, I'm fine, but any down time longer than than and i have to power down/up again.....PLEASE HELP!

Hi lestat97,

Is your Samsung printer connected Wirelessly to the Router? Have you configured your Printer for Power-Saving Mode or to Shut Down Completely?

Is the Printer Software installed on each computer?

Questions because you aren't describing your setup.

Is the Printer have a Static IP Address on the Router?

Hi creator...yes my printer is connected to the router wirelessly.  I have not configured, unless it is the default setting, for my printer to be in power saving mode to shut down.  I only have one computer hooked up wirelessly to the router, my laptop.  As far as your question about the static ip address...i would have no idea....not very tech savy....i do believe during setup that the router assigned an ip to the printer via dhcp...i think

Hi lestat97,

Have you read the SamSung Manual on your Printer? Did you hook up the Printer first to the computer via an USB Cable in order to tell it what your SSID Signal Name was?

Not berating you, but you need to read the manuals on the Printer as well as the Router in order to properly secure it.

I have a Lexmark X6570 Wireless All-in-One and I set it up in the Router for a Static IP Address, which I learned about from Lycan about using it for my Brother Machine at the time.

Here is a shortcut:

Before making changes to anything, decide what you will call your SSID Signal Name and what Security Phrase to use.

Then log into the present IP Address of your Printer. tell it what its IP Address will be and its SSID Signal Name and Security Code and save it.

You won't be able to log back in to the Printer, until you make the changes on the Router.

That simple and easy to do.

Thanks for helping out creator....unfortunately I'm not very tech savy....so I relied on the software cd supplied with the printer to install the printer to the network.  It did require that I hook the printer up to the laptop via usb...and everything else was pretty much straightforward....the software said it located the network...I gave my passcode and the printer was supposedly on the network and ready to go...i could print a test page after installation, but like i said...after a while, i'd have to restart the printer once jobs had been sent to it, to get them to print.  I did use the manual supplied on the disc as well as samsungs website to troubleshoot but I could never get it to work properly...so I was hoping maybe it was just a router issue that may be common and easliy remedied....i don't know how to log into my printer's present ip address, unless you mean the same way i log into the router...which if that's the case, when i type what the printer says is it's current ip address, the page cannot be found online...but i could be doing it wrong....so I'm just stuck really....

I would look at reserving a LAN IP for the wireless printer....

Sometimes the IP can change if you reboot the router and such...not that it will but it can...

Hi lestat97,

You would type http://192.168.0.###

### represents the last numbers that would be reserved for or assigned by the DIR-655 Router.

SamSung might not be set up like the Lexmark All-in-One Wireless is.

If you aren't Tech Savy, I would invest in Network Magic or a similar type of program to help you out.

Use a Trial copy of Network Magic. Don't buy it, for you may not be able to use it with the upgraded Firmware.

Thanks for the help Sammydad1, are you referring to a dhcp reservation?  Do I need to assign the printer a new ip first and if so, how do i do that?  As I mentioned in a previous post, I cannot always log into the printers ip, maybe it has changed?

I restarted the computer and was then able to log into the ip.  It appears the printer has a sleeping mode that it goes into after a certain period of time(I don't know how long that time is) but there is a power saving option in the settings...which i can't turn off but can increase the time.  This did not appear to help though as after a while I'm still unable to "wake" the printer into ready mode....if i could just turn off sleep mode that may work...but i can't...at least not that i can tell anyways.  So I'm assuming the router is not waking the printer....but why?  The job goes to the printer wirelessly from the laptop through the router but then is "stuck" in the printer's sleeping mode....i  can only wake the printer by powering it down and back up...faulty printer maybe?

Hi lestat97,

> faulty printer maybe?  Could be, but doubtful.

faulty printer setup? Most definitely.

You have not mentioned your operating system, Software Firewall package being used, or if the operating system firewall is off or on, if you have a Software Firewall?

My Lexmark Printer has three programs going through the McAfee Software Firewall. Windows Firewall is off.

Is the printer working from your other computer?

When you stated that you can't wake the printer, are you blocking part of the Printer's programs in the Software Firewall?

Hi lestat97,

Check Norton's Incoming Events log for the Norton Firewall. See if it is blocking anything related to the Printer.

I am running McAfee not Norton.

I stated before, I am running a Lexmark X6570 Wireless All-in-One. I have Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 and Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit Version. 7 is wired to the Router, but the Printer remains Wireless.
