Author Topic: Web interface dies along with internet issues - try foreign firmware?  (Read 2617 times)

I have a DIR-655 Hardware version A5, firmware 1.30WW that I bought a few weeks ago in Singapore.
It generally works great, but every few days or so internet issues spring up.

For example, DNS resolutions take a long time or time out, and new socket connections do not always succeed.  Existing sockets seem to work fine.  And most importantly, the web interface fails to load up, even though I can ping the router successfully. The fix I have been using is simply to unplug it and plug it back in.

I've noticed that the D-Link US site has a version 1.34NA.
My first question is: is it possible to put a "NA" firmware on a router from Singapore currently running a "WW" firmware?

I understand that D-Link says not to do this, but is that just them being over-protective?
Is there any actual harm that can come from doing this?

Second: I am not totally sure if 1.34NA is actually newer than 1.30WW just because the number is higher.
1.34NA seems to have been released on 20-May-2010: http://www.d-link.com/support/faqDetail/?prod_id=3287&print=1
And 1.30WW seems to have been released on 26-Aug-2009: http://www.dlink.com.sg/support/support_detail.asp?idproduct=21 (you may need to load this URL twice in the same window/tab for it to open correctly)

So I guess 1.34NA represents something newer, but I am uncertain if the actual numbering is consistent across countries after trying to match features/changes in the change history.

Is there a particular version worth downgrading to?  Anything to watch out for when downgrading?  It seems that downgrading too far is not supported, although the version with the "can't downgrade beyond" warning is 1.21 for Singapore and 1.31NA for the US.

Any tips?

Thanks much
