Can't use MAC Filtering while in AP mode!
« on: July 17, 2010, 08:52:34 AM »

Greetings people,

I'm a great fan of D-Link products since it's the only brand of network devices that provides routers that DO work properly AND are easy to use (unfortunately, all other brands lack at least one of those rules!).

I have recently bought a D-Link DIR-615 router only because I need the MAC Filtering option. Indeed, I have a Nintendo DS that can only connect to the Internet through WEP connection (and not WPA), and my "freebox" (it's the name of the router provided by my French ISP called "Free") dosen't have that feature. I know how unsecure WEP is, which is why I need MAC filetering. The problem is, the router is directly connected to the freebox itself, thus it needs to be configured either in AP mode or to distribute 192.168.1.something addresses, since the freebox already uses the 192.168.0.something addresses.

Unfortunately, if I activate the AP mode, I can't use the MAC Filtering feature anymore! Why is that?
On the other hand, I can't find the option to tell the router to distribute 192.168.1.x addresses! The oddest problem I've encountered is the fact that if I tell my router to take 192.168.0.20 as static IP, it answers "Invalid IP address". I guess it's because it knows that this is supposed to be an ISP's provided IP, and not a local network IP. Do I get it right?

What solution do I have at this point to avoid IP conflicts while using MAC filetering?
Thanks a lot.

Ok, I found a solution: I configured the freebox so it would distribute 192.168.1.x addresses so that the router could distribute 192.168.0.x addresses without conflicts. But still, I would like to know why can't I use MAC filetering in AP mode or why can't I distribute 192.168.1.x addresses with the router! Can anybody answer? This router sucks!
