"link file" schedule status

I just got my DNS-321 and started playing with the schedule feature (under Applications). When I click on "Download Now", sometimes the status changes to "L" which per manual means "link file". There is no explanation of what this means, so wondering if anyone here knows anything. Once the file completed download while it was in this state, but a couple of other times, it never seemed to happen. I would appreciate any information on this.
