I agree with Sammy, although I've always thought the distance one can make a Cat 5 cable was about 100 meters maximum (or about 300 ft). You may get some loss of the signal for anything longer than 300 ft, but I suppose that depends on how the quality of the cable is.
If possible, I would use a switch/HUB between the two houses rather than at the end. May not be possible if there is no power supply or shelter between the two homes, so in that case I would follow Sammy's advice. Who knows, maybe you won't get any signal loss over 400 ft and you won't have to worry about it all...
