Dell 1510 wireless N adapter
« on: July 28, 2010, 07:43:37 PM »

So it dawned on me recently that the only wireless N adapter I have should probably be able to handle running at 300Mbps connection.  Yes I realize that's not the throughput you get and the 130 I'm seeing is probably more than enough for my 20Mbps internet, but just wondering why its not getting to 300.  It was at 300 when I had the router at 5Ghz but I had to put it back to 2.4 for wireless PS3 on G.  These are settings I have on the router:

802.11 Band : 2.4GHz
802.11 Mode : N, G, B
Enable Auto Channel Scan : yes
Wireless Channel : (comes on to 6)
Transmission Rate : best
Channel Width : auto 20/40
Visibility Status : Visible

I use WPA-personal, auto WPA or WPA2 which I need for one adapter to connect, can't do just WPA2
AES
update interval 3600

I know there's more settings to mess with in the adapters config, but I think I've tried everything suggested on this and other forums.  Any thoughts?

The router has to be at N mode only at 5Ghz to get the 300Mb connection. Anything else will be at 130Mb or 54Mb.

While I do believe that, I don't actually see the 5Ghz mentioned anywhere in that sticky.  How is it that other adapters can work at 2.4Ghz and get 300Mbps?  This all started in my search for a D-Link PCI adapter where I noticed they are all 2.4Ghz (I think, maybe I didn't see them all) so wouldn't that imply that D-Link doesn't make an adapter that works with its own router at 300Mbps?  Maybe there are newer D-Link routers that can do this?

I've never been able to get 2.4Ghz to connect at 300Mb connection unless I set it up for 5Ghz only. Not sure what other adaptor might work at 2.4Ghz at get the same connection speed. As far as my experience goes, it's always been 5Ghz N mode only. 2.4Ghz gets me 130Mb connection always. I think it might depend on the client adaptor too. Theres just too many of them to figure out. LOL

Well here's something interesting I just noticed.  I'm looking at the D-Link DWA-556 (anyone know of a better D-link adapter for N?) and it never mentions max connection speed on D-links spec sheet on their website, but here at Tigerdirect where I was checking out pricing it does say 300Mbps:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=2911658&sku=D700-5564

That's what made me think it was possible, but maybe it's just Tiger hoping people will equate 300Mbps w/ any N setup?

Can anyone confirm if they have an adapter that works on 2.4Ghz and 300Mbps?

And another thought, the first thing mentioned in the sticky about 300Mbps connection requirements is that both products are D-link, but what's an example of a D-Link adapter that works with 5Ghz?  I know that others will still work of course and they only want to support D-Link products, but I'm really confusing myself on this now...

From my experience is that getting a 300Mb connection requires HW that will support the 5Ghz band. If the HW doesn't support it then you'll be just getting the 130Mb or 54Mb connection. Like my MacBook Pro and Airport Extreme Base station. It can dual band the 5Ghz and multi modes on WiFi and I can connect getting 270Mb actual connection displayed. Still not as stable as 2.4Ghz band. For the 4500, you can only get the 300Mb or 270Mb connection when it's in single mode N at 5Ghz. And again, it's not stable unless it's in line of sight with out much obstructions. And then again, your not getting any more speed thru put, it's just the connection. I think once they figure out how to make the 5Ghz N mode connection more stable it will be good. I think for now, 2.4Ghz is the best for general use.

Here's another one advertised as 300Mbps but only says 2.4Ghz.  Maybe they will still work with limited range at 5GHz?

I'd recommend asking someone is the D-Link DWA-542 forum and see if anyone has this and if it really can do a 300Mb connection and how they do it...Would be interested to know.

See the Intel post. Basically Intel made a call when designing their chips when N was in Draft which make them incompatible with the way most routers transmit N at the 40mhz band.

Note that I don't have an Intel adapter though, this is a Broadcom I think.  Anyway, I think I've figured this out, but will have to wait and test something tonight on the router.  There's a setting for the adapter called "WZC IBSS Channel Number" which was at "11(20Mhz)" and I'm trying it at "11(40MHz-U)".  So far still works on the G network at work, I'm hoping this makes it work on the DGL 4500 @ 300Mbps while still using the 2.4Ghz band.

PS - Anyone know what the U stands for in 40MHz-U?

Your dealing with Wireless Zero Configuration channel and I believe the U is for Upper, meaning there is a upper band that is shared with a Lower band signal on the same frequency. Thus a Upper and a Lower. I think this is the meaning. I've been looking and hard to find exact terms and descriptions.

It was still at 130Mbps on the 4500, so back to the drawing board I guess.  But that was when other computers were connected.  So I'm wondering, does this 20/40 Mhz selection have to be the same for all computers?  I saw something in the router config page saying it was still at 20Mhz, so maybe when I get a chance I'll try to connect on my own with no other computers connected.  The others were G clients.

im thinking that the 20/40 auto only needs to be set up on the 4500, I presume that the clients could use either or, depending on what they support and what actually works. Let us know what you find.

Yeah I think that too, but I'm thinking this is the determining factor, 300Mbps w/ 40Mzh, 130Mbps with 20Mhz?
