QoS Issues/Questions
« on: March 13, 2008, 12:14:03 PM »

The sole reason I bought the 655 was because I wanted/needed better QoS for my VoIP (CV from ATT).  I've tried various QoS configurations and none seem to help.

Problem -- when downloading (something as simple as a youtube video) the audio received is extremely choppy.  (Multiple speedtests confirm my downlink is close to 5MB, upload close to 384k).

I have tried with and without the "Automatic classification" and "Dynamic Fragmentation".  I've tried setting the VoIP QoS priority to different levels (1, 64, 128).  None of it seems to make a difference.

I'm setting up the QoS rule using the reserved DHCP address of my TA as the local address, default of all for the remote IPs and "Any" for the protocol.

Even added a second rule that encapsulates the rest of the my reserved DHCP IPs for my workstations and made sure that was at a higher priority than the "VoIP" rule.

None of it seems to make a difference.

Any thoughts on something else to try?  If I can't get this working I suppose I'll just have to return it and stick the TA back out in front and see if ATT will make sure I'm in bucket 3.

Hi Camattin,

Open the Web User Interface (WebUI) of the DIR-655 in you web browser, you'll want to navigate to the STATUS tab and INTERNET SESSIONS page. This is a listing of all currently open communications to the Internet (anything with *.*.*.*:* is a Virtual Server, Port forward, Special Application, or UPnP Dynamic Entry). You'll need to locate any entry with your TA (reserved IP) then look at the corresponding Priority column. It's should have the QoS Priority that you had assigned it. If not, we need to make not of the ports being utilized by the majority of the communication; that's the ":#####" (where is # a numeric value from 1-65535).

So, once we have that list of ports, you'll want to transpose them to the actual entry you made in the QoS rules (just edit the rule appropriately). Let us know, if the INTERNET SESSIONS table is still showing the wrong priority being assigned. Also, as always, make sure you have the latest firmware version loaded for the DIR-655.

K, I will gather that info later this evening.  I left QoS disabled yesterday and can't bounce the router during the day (work from home).  But I will definitely test that out and post the results.

Sorry for not stating earlier.. I'm using the latest beta firmware (1.11 MSBeta B39).  I also experienced this behavior with the released 1.11.

Ok, the 655 thinks it's got the QoS right:

Local   NAT   Internet   Protocol   State   Dir   Priority   Time Out
192.168.0.104:5060   5060   12.194.239.134:5060   UDP   -   Out   1   273

So here's what I've done now... I've created 2 rules for VoIP.  The first is a rule specific to the TA's IP, outbound for udp port 5060 (priority 1).  The second is another rule specific to the TA's IP, outbound for all udp ports > 1024.  Redundant, I'm sure, but it seems to have helped.

I streamed some video over 80 (i.e. youtube) and some over rtsp (i.e. a live feed).  I heard a blip here and there, but it was certainly a good improvement.  Next week when I'm back on conference call after call, I'll have some more data to verify with more certainty.
