I got new DIR-655 with H/W B1 and F/W 2.00NA. Local Best Buy has both of them on sale at same price. The newer one (H/W B1) has blue box and the old one has orange box. Here is what I found from the boxes:
- They have same UPC code: 7-90069-29856-1
- They have same model No: DIR-655
- The blue box has H/W Ver: B1 and F/W Ver:2.00NA
- The orange box has H/W Ver: A4 and F/W Ver:1.34NA
- The pictures in orange box shows the router has one more LED Light.
I went the newer version hoping the hardware has been improved and better F/W support.
The installation is very smooth. I tested with a Dell Latitude E6400. The wireless connection properties shows it has 270M. (I did not do real test) I am very satisfied.
In the admin interface, there is IPV6 item. So I guess it does support IPV6
It seems the router has some sort of Linux on it, since I can found /etc/resolve.conf, /etc/host, etc in th log.
Any one in this forum knew what is new for hardware B1 and confirm this router has linux in it?
Kind of seen this coming, so I returned my DIR-655 A4 for a DIR-825 B1, the DIR-825 B1 is great, but the wireless range is half of the DIR-655. I even turned off the 5 GHZ radio in the DIR-825 and put better antennas on it, the improvement was only a marginal gain in coverage.
If the DIR-655 B1 supports IPV6 and has the same powerful transmitters as the older A1-A4 series and you don’t need the 5 GHZ, the DIR-655 is the way to go!
I will be interested to hear feedback on the B1 hardware! I have no need for 5 GHZ, that is the band my cordless phones use.
The DIR-825 is the only “N” AP I have. Now I wished I would have measured the power out of the old A4 (at the antenna port) that I had so I could have compared it to the DIR-825.
I think my FCC licenses allow me several hundred watts on 2.4 Ghz, but that is kinda like an Alligator, all teeth and no ears…… Nothing like wiping out half the city to talk with a device 30 meters away!
Any word on this new version supporting IPV6 and how is the range?
