Since these have a cult following, along with DD-WRT and Tomato builds, I thought I'd give one a try.

Nobody biting on the WRT54G question?  It's ok, we can still love DLink and try other, outdated things. 

About the modem costs, I had a great 6141 that got fried by lightning.  I wish I'd have had the Ubee, Charter modem on there at the time.  It's definitely cheaper to rent the ISP modem if you have a lot of electrical storms which result in ruined equipment.  That was the only one we experienced and it ran through the cable line, which is buried, and not the electrical lines, which are also buried.  I replaced it with a 6121 but Charter doesn't supply 8 channel DS bonding, so the 6141 may not have ever seen it's potential realized.

There maybe some users over one the DIR-615 forum since that router can use 3rd Party FW. I recommend that you refer to the WRT forums or maybe Linksys forums for user experiences with that model router. I have used WRT on my NG router before. The WRT54G max WiFi is G mode and I think LAN speed is only 100Mb.
