Ping spikes on LAN

Hello.
I have installed a dlink 628 router to use with my Thompson  speedtouch st516v5 modem.
I'm experiencing occasional ping spikes noticible when playing games online.
This didn't happen with my old router - I've enabled qos to the ip in question, forwarded the appropriate ports for tcp/Udp. I've even tried placing my ip in dmz. I'm at a loss and would really appreciate some sort of assistance, thanks.
