Xbox 360/ Dir-655, connection issues
« on: August 13, 2010, 07:33:53 AM »

I bought a new D-Link DIR-655 router last month, I seriously wanted those gigabit wired ports. Well got the thing home, all set up, flashed the firmware on it. Jumped in and set up some Port Forwarding for the Xbox 360, ran a new Network cable to it.
Almost added it to a DMZ but chose not to at the last instance. Anyway, my connection when playing MW2 is utter crap now. I get maybe 2 bars a lobby screen, guys stutter step all over the place, and when I join a party, it randomly drops me.
When "Finding a Match" I have been skipping past the <50ms games and generally jumping to the 95ms and 120ms. So thats different as well. The Router is on the supported list, and nothing has changed on my network from when I was running the Linksys WRT-54G (I think thats the model), other than upgrading the Router. My NAT reads as open, and the Connection tests fine, its purely in game. Anyone have any advice?

When turning on the Xbox, it also doens't auto-connect to XBox Live anymore, I have to "Test the Connection first". The system is acting as if router isn't allowing the manual IP to get acquired even though I have reserved it within the router by MAC address.

Note: None of these problems existed on my old Router. Only two components on my end have changed, a new 14ft network cable, and the DIR-655 Router. So please refrain from saying its a problem with the Xbox.
I am still sitting on my Linksys wrt-54g, and I'd frigging hate to have to jump back to it, but its been getting to that, espicially since I swapped the routers back last night and the older one worked better. Please help so I can get away from Linksys/ Cisco

There are quite some topics about Xbox on this 655 forum. You might want to check fist if your issue isn't already solved. Main thing with Xbox issues is that you need to configure the setup correctly.

I did search under the forums before posting here.

That being said, I can't think of a single thing I could have done wrong with my setup, which is why I posted here.

I can take snapshots of my setup and provide them once I get home this evening, not really an issue.

It is not a golden rule that you can simply exchange one router with another. There's a lot of settings on the DIR. Either you have a DOA router (which will also cause a normal PC connection to fail) or you just have set the DIR up incorrectly. Every network has it's properties to be set, depending on the chain of devices you may need to change settings.

Try playing around with these settings:

-disable/enable QoS AND/OR dynamic fragmentation (this one can be critical)
- try different WAN port settings (auto/fixed)
- Eable/disable Multicast
- Assign static IP instead of DHCP
- try different router firewall settings
- enable/disable DNS Relay

And turn this OFF:

Use Unicasting : (compatibility for some DHCP Servers)

Always broadcast: (compatibility for some DHCP Clients)

Try disabling QoS...

Working through some of the options above now. Nutshell of what I did upon setup:

  • Flashed the firmware
  • Installed using the Software that came with the router.
  • ensured basic connectivity to all wireless and hardlined devices
  • Enabled Static IP on the Xbox
  • Reserved the IP on the Router using the Xbox MAC Address
  • Placed the IP of the Xbox into a DMZ
  • Enabled QoS and gave the Xbox Priority over all other devices.

(Will update tomorrow on what options I tested/ what results were achieved)

I suggest you reserve an IP in the router setup for the 360.....then set the 360 for Auto (as opposed to manually entering IP information).  We have a couple 360's here, the my DIR is hardware A2, which seems more stable than the newer A4, or so it seems....

Interesting, okay, so reserve it by Mac on the router, but keep the 360 as dynamic. Curious though, what would that affect, because I can't think of anything, which is most likely due to my not doing hardware work for 4 years and only being a SQL dev.
(NOTE: Not doubting that it could have an affect, just not understanding the potential there)

I ran through some of the options that you all suggested last night, and while ticking my wife off because she kept losing connection (router reboots), there was literalyl no gain or loss for the situation.

This could very well be a problem with my ISP, I am wondering if they are limiting my overall bandwidth to lower than what I am paying for. Which would not be a shock as I suffered under Comcast for years.
(Now I suffer under MediaCom Cable)

Riddle me this though:
When I call Mediacomm, they tell me that I cannot have a router plugged in for them to test bandwidth, I have to have either the 360 or a PC directly connected to the cable modem. Which I think is utter BS, because they should still be able to test Bandwidth to the modem and there fore to the router. Even if the data flow stops there they can tell how much I am drawing down. At least this is how it works in my mind.

I envision the whole setup as water pipes, the flow is constant to all areas, even if a hose is shut off or blocked, you should see whats sent to the house as a whole.

(I may need coffee as that makes sense to me but maybe not others)

It's a bit more complicated that that, each of your water pipes can add attributes to another one whcih influence the direction or speed the water flows through them, all depending on the water level inside each of the pipes. That should complete your comparison.  ;)

I have a Xbox 360 and a DIR-655 and I've never had any problems in any game (I use wireless N).

I used these settings found here (mostly):

Gaming and QoS for XBL

I know these are for a DGL-4500, but I understand they are very similar.

I can post my settings if you need me to.
