I just bought a DNS-321 and have a 2TB drive mounted in one of the bays. Now I want to use this to backup my media and share that out on my home network. I also want to backup my documents/scans onto this device but restrict access to this data.

I have set this up using SMB but what ends up happening is that either every folder is accessible to every body on the n/w or when I set up specific access to one user to a specific folder and all users access to media folder, I keep getting prompted even when trying to surf the Media folder. Is there a way to set this up so that Media folder doesnt get a prompt but the other one does.? Will NFS help here? Also how do you enter the password to get access is it IP\username or workgroup\username or ..?

Welcome to the club.   The answer is no, permissions on this box is an all or nothing affair.  This is one of the complaints that is floating around about the current firmware.

I have never tried NFS, from the comments I see in the forums, it's not exactly the best way to access this box, too many issues.  I honestly don't know how the permissions for NFS work on these devices.

Welcome to the club.   The answer is no, permissions on this box is an all or nothing affair.  This is one of the complaints that is floating around about the current firmware.

This is odd since the Product data sheet says that you can set quotas for different users.  If you can set different quotas why not be able to set different permissions.

You can set different permissions, what you can't do is mix anonymous shares with password protected shares.
