New feature suggestion. ISO mount
« on: August 16, 2010, 08:25:02 AM »

I don’t know how realistic this is gonna sound, but I have a suggestion. I keep a lot of ISOs on my DNS-323, so if I had an option to mount any ISO stored on DNS-323 hard drive as a share, it would be a very useful feature I think.

Do you agree?

How does one do this without firing up SSH or Telnet and running a script, complete with a full path to the file you wish to mount?

I guess one doesn't.
It is possible, I guess, if things are a bit more static: If you place your iso in a certain location and give it a specific name. Then, you could add a scheduled job that would run the script and mount it (and another one to umount it) with a click of a button from the web interface.

You presume that this will be added to the GUI, I seriously doubt that will happen any time soon.

You could probably do that if you install Fonz Fun Plug + lighttpd + php and some elbow grease.

Is it because D-Link does not care what we think/ask for?

Give that man a cigar. :D  I think it's more along the lines of how many people actually would find this useful.  Remember, the folks here are probably a very small percentage of the user population for these boxes.  I'm guessing that D-Link gets it's marketing information from other sources.

Are you looking at mounting data cd/dvd iso images? If so, there are lots of free/pay utilities to mount iso images and map to a drive letter. I used Daemon Tools, a commercial product.

If you are after something else, then ignore :)

That's what I use right now. Just trying to keep the number of the apps installed on the pc to a minimum. If you have a few computers on your network, each computer needs to get Daemon tools installed.

I, personally, use Virtual CloneDrive.
You can find alternatives here: http://alternativeto.net/desktop/daemon-tools
