Cant add or remove files. Permissions problem
« on: August 20, 2010, 10:52:11 PM »

Just like the title says.  i cant change any files that I have on the 323 unless I log in as guest.  If I log in as Admin I cant do anything except for read only.  I have changed it in the web interface so that any user can read or write but it still only lets me read only for any account other than Guest.  Any hints why this may be happening?

If you are running firmware version 1.08 or higher, you need to login with a username and password of one of the users you have created in the NAS's web interface.

I did.  I erased all the users then recreated one and gave it rw access to everything on volume 1.  I can write to volume 1 but to none of the folders inside it.  The only account I can write to subfolders I have created is the guest account.

It would appear that some files/folders you have created on your NAS belong to another user - hence the permission trouble you are having. Not fully understanding your situation but if I was in a similar position I would reset the file permissions on all the files on the box using chown.

I think this may be one of the "reset to factory defaults" fixes.  That has sorted it out for several people.

Yeah, i think they were created by the Guest account.  I have full access to them with that account.  Even after adding a new user and giving them full permissions to volume 1 I cant add or remove files.  Ill try the factory reset.

AFAIK a factory reset won't change the ownership of files already on the NAS but it will probably help in another way. Strange thing is, all files you create on the NAS through SMB have 777 permissions so all users should have read write access anyway. The NAS permissions only come in to play at share level.

Several people have cured this issue by a factory reset, which is why I suggest it. :)

I'm not disagreeing with you. I'm wondering how the issue arises in the first place when all files have 777 access.

Well, the fact that all the files indeed appear to have 777 access, suggests that it's something about the configuration that is confusing SAMBA.  I suspect that's why the reset is effective, it erases all the custom configuration.

I've never experienced this, so I can't say for 100% sure what might cure it, or how it comes about. :)

Wonder if Reset Nework Access list would have worked too?

Anyway, glad it's sorted. Hail to the factory reset.

If you have the time and energy to reconfigure the box :)

Well, you can spin your wheels for hours trying to sort it out otherwise, see the other threads here and you can watch the level of frustration rise as they progress. :)
