DIR-655 + Comcast + U-Verse = ?
« on: August 28, 2010, 05:11:39 PM »

So, I'm doing some moving of things around and want to put my spare uverse box in my den on my 3rd monitor so I can watch football games and things of that nature while I'm working and all that jazz.  I have a good idea as to how I want to do this, but I'm not entirely sure if it's going to work.  I'm not sure this forum will even be a help, but I know AT&T and Comcast have no idea what is going on, so I don't even bother talking to them.

So, here it goes...

I have a DIR-655 that houses my home network for wired and wireless devices and Comcast is my ISP.  I also have another network which is U-verse and only the boxes are connected to the RG.  Due to lack of forethought, when I had my place built I didn't put 2 ethernet runs in all my rooms so I could run two separate networks.  How silly of me, lol.  I was able to do that in my living room, because I could get to the area with a drill from the basement, but no such luck for the den.

I would like to join my two networks so they can be friends.  So, I was thinking I'd disable the DHCP on the DIR-655 and let the RG do the IP serving,  but I'm not entirely sure how that is going to work due to the internet coming in on the DIR-655.  I really just want to be able to allow my DIR-655 to talk with the RG network so I can hook up my spare box via the DIR-655 network and still watch TV.  Not to mention once AT&T gets the media room 2.0 stuff going I would like to use my xbox and windows 7 PCs as set top boxes so I can get rid of all my spare boxes and save me some cashola.  Anyway, so my biggest question mark is how to let the RG hand out IPs and still get the internet from the DIR-655.  This was all a bit easier when I had AT&T as my ISP, but it just didn't work well enough for me.  That last mile of copper is really hindering what could be a really awesome entertainment service.

Is everyone confused now? :)

You can set the 655 as a bridge.

The setting is hidden but you can view/change it by doing the following.

Log into the 655 web page then click on Network Settings.

Now change your browser to view the page without a style and you will see WAN Port Mode on the page with the ability to enable Bridging.

To view the page without a style in Internet Explorer just go to View > Style > No Style
