Need 2TB drive for use with media player.
« on: September 03, 2010, 10:40:23 AM »

I searched and didn't find anything recent on the topic.  I need a drive for my WDTV media player that would work best with the 323 i just bought.  I was thinking about the Samsung Spinpoint F4 drive but would appreciate any suggestions as i'm just new.  That's all the 323 will be used for BTW, connected to WDTV.

You want to connect the NAS to your WDTV via USB? You know this is a "network" attached storage device, right?

yeah and ?  This is the easiest way to play movies to my WDTV.  i already filled my 1.5 TB external so thia looks to be the best solution.  Please advise me if I'm incorrect.  It was on sale cheaper than the 321 so ithought it was a no brainer.

EDIT:  i see your questioning the usb part.  Yeah sorry,  i can conect via network cable too.  i just ment it would be connected directly to the media player and nothing else.

Looks like i'm gonna order the samsang spinpoint f4.

You should be fine connecting over Ethernet either directly or via a router. The USB port however is for other uses. Not quite sure why you would favour a NAS over an external USB drive though. Seems a waste to not have it accessible elsewhere.

I'm running two Samsung F3's - 500GB and 2TB and happy so far. Sure the F4's will be fine.

As you know this much more flexible and can grow with my needs.  An external drive is limited. Mines full
Now and I need to upgrade. If I had this to begin with i'ld just have to add another drive. Plus it's easier for the kids as the movies will spear as one drive too.

Seems like you don't like the way I'm gonna use the device.

... I don't think you can use the DNS323 as a USB drive for the WDTV .....
As far has I know you cant access the data on the DNS-323 from its USB port....

might I suggest you take a look here:
http://forum.wdlxtv.com/
might give you more ideas on how to use the WDTV....

If you have a WDTV Live, you can always stream movies from the  DNS-323 to the WDTV over the network.... thats what I do

There's an echo in here :)

As for not liking the setup, it's personal preference. I'd rather stick the NAS on the network somewhere away from my TV and access it that way. You can manage it and its contents from a networked computer, and generally gives more flexibility. Not sure I would want fan noise and 3 flashing lights next to my TV. Shutting it in a cabinet might not be good for ventilation.

There, it has be edited so on more confusion and we can stay on the hard drive, wich is all i wanted. my fault for not thinking before posting. I see your point about the the fan noise and flashing lights, i never mentioned it was for a proper HT set up and everything is concealed.

I'll try the drive and let everyone know.  Thanks again.  hopefully the rest is easy.
