It should last at least until it fails, perhaps longer, but I wouldn't bet the rent money on it.

I don't know of any consumer class products that offer a MTBF.  If D-link has one published that would surprise me quite a bit.

There is no best answer to your question. It’s like a car. One of them might be flakey or others could last longer than what you would even imagine. Hence it's hard to say about the average life expectancy of a router, user should keep the unit in an area that's not too warm or hot to avoid the overheating the board and its circuits when the transmitters generate a lot of heat. :'( Also consider putting the router with the power surge to stabilize the circuit and its capacitors.

I think the orignal question is pretty silly. It's impossible for us to determine the life time of a consumer product. We're not in control of it's use, what its conected to, how long it's on. etc.

Hi,

If you want to maximize your router's life...strongly suggest you run your router thru your UPS (battery backup) ON battery protection....I can't speak from other than anecdotal observation here, but battery backup seem to help prevent spikes and such as well as the battery backup during brown-outs.

I would also throw ambient room temperature into the mix.  Routers, like most PC equipment, generate heat.  I try to keep my "Data" room cooler than the rest of the rooms for this reason.

In my experience, I never had one that died, they just stopped doing what they suppose to be doing. For example dir 655, 3-4 months before it started limiting access to certain websites, started doing random reboots, dropping connections under more than usual load.

How long did you own the 655?
