Sudden Wireless Connection Problems
« on: September 05, 2010, 08:53:41 AM »

I never had any issues till just recently with only wireless connections. I was with no internet for about four months up intill two weeks ago I got it back thats when the issues started. With the same wireless setup when since I still had internet and everything was fine. I've been having problems now trying to connect and or getting disconnected wirelessly, even though every thing is still the same. This router was really working fine up intill now. Any sort of help will be much appreciated.
Thanks

Everytime you lose wireless connection, do you lose your internet connection on the wired computers as well?

No, my wired connections are always connected; I never had issues with that. Its only wireless connections, when I get disconnected I just have to keep on trying to get back on. Sometimes I get right back on other times not and also when I get disconnected its often sometimes its not for a long time till I do but most times I do get disconnected. It would seem as if my wireless signal goes out or something but where I use my wireless internet the signal is always 100%, so I don't know what's going on.

Hmmm... wireless interference could be one of the root causes... have you tried upgrading its firmware?

Yes I already tried that. I upgraded my firmware from 1.21 to 1.34NA, so even when I noticed this problem I still had version 1.21. I might try to move my router some where else see if that helps any even though its worked fine there where it is now. Maybe its like you said interference, but connecting to another wireless network I have no problem. Now I'm thinking back I did reset my modem could that be the cause? Maybe something on the modem has changed since when I didn't have this problem.

If your wired computers are fine, then there's nothing wrong with the modem. As soon as you have changed the location of the router, check if you are experiencing the same problem.
If it experiences the same problems, try changing the channel of the router to 11.

Do you have any Vista computers on the network?

I have a similar problem. The culprit was interference from the cordless phone. The connection drops randomly (sort of). By pure coincidence, I notice the line drops exactly when my cordless phone rings. After switching the router to a fixed channel (9), the line no longer drops. The 2.4Ghz cordless phone was later replaced with a 1.9Ghz, and I have no problem since, the phone needs replacing anyway.

Well my main computer is running Vista.
It might be interference but out of my control. I don't own a cordless phone, I do have three cell phones I'll try to turn those off. I did think it was wireless speaker but that has been unplugged. What I have noticed is that I'm not having too many difficulties trying to connecting wirelessly for now, before took me three or six times to connect. However the disconcerting still occurs, in one hour I got disconnected four times completely random. Also when I scan for networks I don't always see my ssid in till I scan it two or three times but it always show up as 100% signal strength.

On the Vista machine(s) Go to: Start button>>Settings>>Network Connections>>Double click "Local area connection>>A box will pop up>> local area connection status>>click on proprieties>>The next pop up will have a scroll down menu, in the scroll down menu, see if IPV6 is installed, if so, is there a check mark next to it? If there is, uncheck the check box next to it, don't mess with anything else. If IPV6 was checked, after you uncheck it, use the close and exit buttons, NOT the "X" buttons to get out of those menus. Make sure you restart the router.

If IPV6 was checked, you should be fine now, why a computer with IPV6 will take down the wireless network is beyond me, but it does(actually Vista is famous for this from what I read!). There are also some other fixes if this was not the case.

This is a very good router, the setup is slightly kludgey, but once working, mine was rock solid, but I traded up to something that supports IPV6 (the new Dir-825 I have has now been rock solid for 2 days), IPV6 is not a need YET, for most people.

I am currently on an XP machine at work, so my instructions may not match 100%, if not, lookup how to disable IPV6 in the Vista OS on Goggle. This solved all of the problems with the router for me. I think with some of the newer updates Microsoft is pushing to Vista, IPV6 gets enabled. This creates ALL kinds of problems with this router! :'(

Let us know if this works!

I disabled IPV6 on my main computer I restarted everything. Last night seem like that had done it but when I got home today I'm again having problems getting online and staying connected. I really thought that was it, any other ideas? Maybe I just need to replace it.

Go to the router interface, login>>setup>>wireless settings>> verify that Enable Auto Channel Scan is UNCHECKED, pick a good channel like 1 or 11. I think some really old adapters will NOT do channel 11, but that is really the best channel away from the neighbors cordless that also resides in the same frequency range. I see above you tried 11, then go for 1, 6 is the worst!

Did you do a hard reset after the firmware upgrade (a little button on the back of the router)?

Also, do you have mixed adapters(computers) on the wireless, B,G,N, or just one flavor like G?  If your computers are all the same like G, set that also while you are in the wireless setting menu, to G only or G & N only.

Under tools>> time, is enable daylight savings time checked, if so uncheck (I have no clue why), also while you are there, set the correct time "copy your computers time setting".

Honestly you should have stayed with 1.21, I switched back and forth 3 times between 1.21 and 1.34, 1.21 was the best!

If you search, there is a thread on how to down grade from 1.34 back to 1.21. When I got my router it had 1.32 in it, it was useless and I went to 1.34, it was still pretty bad! I had 1.21 up and running for several days with no problem before I sent the router back!
