I'm trying out a script from jamieburchell to do a backup and email myself a log - I realized though that I no longer have my DNS-323 connected to a router, but rather it's connected to my computer directly with a crossover cable.

I'm wondering if it's possible at all to get access to the web to run commands like wget, mailx, etc from the DNS-323, or whether it requires that a router be present in the middle - I hope not, because in my current setup adding a router into the mix is not possible. (My computer of course can access the web.)

Yes.

Since you say you have access to the internet, I can only assume that you have two NICs in your computer. You can enable an internet bridge between the teo NICs in your PC and that will allow the DNS323 access to the internet.

Depending on your O/S, look for something called Internet Connection Sharing in the Network Advanced properties.

I was afraid that might be the answer - the internet connection I have on my computer is not a regular wireless internet connection, but one of those USB wifi sticks. It appears under the Dial Up section in Windows networking and I can't highlight LAN and DialUp together and use the Bridge feature. (That would work if I were to highlight LAN and Wireless)

Maybe it has something to do with the default gateway - on my computer, I set the following for LAN:
IP address: 192.168.0.35
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1  (I just put this in, I don't know why or if it's right)
DNS Server: 192.168.0.1

On my DNS 323, I put the following:
IP address: 192.168.0.32
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1  (again, not sure why this is set as it is)

So my computer and DNS-323 can see each other, because they're on the same subnet. But the DNS-323 cannot see the web, though my computer can (thanks to the USB internet stick).

Maybe I need to set the default gateway to something else on my computer, on the DNS-323, or both? When I do an ipconfig /all on my (Windows) computer, I see the details of my USB internet stick.

I'm not familiar with those, but you could try setting the default gateway on the DNS323 to the IP address of your computer as see if that works. 192.168.0.35

I'm not sure how you got away with having them on the same subnet, but it is worth a try.

Are you using a USB WiFi adapter or a USB cellular modem?

A USB WiFi adapter will usually work with ICS, but the cellular modem application software is usually written to prevent that connection from being shared.

Rather than trying to bridge the connections - try to right click the dialup connectoid and select share - it may or may not let you do it - the one I have (from O2) will allow you to set it, but will say you need to restart the connection to complete, and when you restart it loses the settings.

If I understand correctly - the internet connection is some sort of cellular (HSPDA/GPRS/EDGE) modem - these usually take the form of a PCMCIA card or more recently a USB dongle, although mini-PCI & miniPCIe cards also exist.

Unless your router has the correct interface and firmware to take the modem (and such routers do exist, they're just not that common - DLink DIR450 is one) there's no way to share the connection.

My primary connection is a DSL service, and that ISP also provides free dialup, if I want to use it from a different location, and I use a ZTE MF100 USB dongle as a backup for those occassions on which the line might go down rendering both DSL & dialup unavailable.
