Wireless Jitter
« on: September 09, 2010, 09:19:51 PM »

My wireless seems to be fine, but then if I leave my laptop on for a while (1+ days), my ping starts jittering while in game. Once I close out of the game, it is fine no jittering. I'm talking like I get ping of like 1, 1, 1, then spike up to 900ms, etc... Problem fixes when I disable and re-enable my adapter, but it's really annoying. Is there a reason why it does this?

Sounds like a software glitch. Have you tried changing the process priority? Eitherway, don't think its in the router.

Well the thing is, I don't even see exactly what the problem is. Your saying if you have the game running for over a day straight you start getting wireless jitter until you disable and enable the adapter? First, that likly has nothing to do with the router, and is a effect of the adapter. Second, it could be any number of things that is causing it. Is your computer going into sleep or hybernate mode during this time? If so, I would check the power savings mode on the adapters power savings mode. Look:

Start > Run > NCPA.CPL > Right click "Wireless Network Connection" and click on Properties > Click on Configure > Click on the Advanced Tab

Look for anything that is Power mode, or Enenergy Conserve more, or Green mode. Turn it off or set it to lowest mode (best performance). All the adapters have different settings though. If it isn't going into hybernate mode, next I would check the application. More info here. But it could be your DNS service on your computer, or..really..any kind of thing. To be honest, the amount of effort it would take to track the problem down might not be worth it. Is there a reason it needs to run for so long? Am I not understanding something?

I leave my laptop on usually, no sleep no hibernating. Connection is usually pretty decent over N. However after the laptops been on for several days, I start noticing my wireless N connection starts to get jittery, especially when in games like SC2. I ping 192.168.0.1 and I might get ping that's like 1, 2 ,1, 900+, 1, 1, 1, 900+. Which is really weird cuz when I was using G it never did that.

Ok,ok ok. So your laptop is on for that long, not the game. That makes much more sense. I thought you were one of those types that keeps WoW open and running for 48hr+ straight.

But now I see the issue. So your right on pinging the router's gateway and not going by any latency readouts from the game. The thing is, I can't think of anything off the top of my head that would cause that. The highest random factor in regards to wireless would be the group key interval, which by default is 3600 seconds, or 1 hr, but your stretch of time is longer then that. Some things you can try

1. Try a different laptop if you have one.
2. Try keeping it wired for a couple days, see if it happens then.
3. Go to the forums for your wireless adapter, ask there.
4. Try disabling the security on your router for a day or two.

If its the same with encryption on or off, I bet my hat its some setting, or driver issue with your wireless NIC. That would be further confirmed by trying a different laptop or going wired. Sorry couldnt really be of more help, its just most outside of the kind of problems we deal with here. Good luck.

I'm using an intel 6300.

Yea the weird thing is, i kinda got my wireless connection to stay at a stable 243-270 mbps now, but even when it says that its great signal, I am getting these jittering problems when the connection has been on for a long time. And it fixes if I disable the adapter and re enable it. And I am using the latest intel drivers for the card.

Next time it happens see if Ipconfig /release > Ipconfig /renew does the same thing.

Also, are you using Windows Wireless Zero or the Intel Utility?

Went through the manual, and looked at the adapter settings, and this is what I suggest:

802.11N Channel Width(2.4Ghz): Auto
802.11N Channel Width(5.2Ghz):Auto
802.11N Mode: Enabled
Skip all the Ad Hoc stuff.
Mix Mode protection: On
Power Management: Maximum
Roaming: Lowest
Throughput: Enable
Transmit Power: Maximum (Unless over 80% signal level, then adjust accordingly)
Wireless Mode. N only if you have it. Or G only if you don't.

Though I still think its the Power Management system which is causing your problem, so you may also try to set that to disable. Really though, this question is best for the Intel forums.

There is your likely problem.  I had a huge problem with latency with the latest drivers from intel on my 6300N.  I went back to stock (I can get the version number if you need) and I no longer have any latency issues.  Exact symptoms you have, some pings were low and then a huge spike for a while and then back to low.

I just uninstalled the driver completely and installed the oldest one I could find on intel's website. 13.0.0.107
