DSM510 freeze after 2 hours of play
« on: March 28, 2008, 08:05:00 PM »

I was just wandering if anyone else has experienced this.

My setup is:  Several DSM510 in different rooms, and a DSM520 using XP with SP2 and  WMP11 as the media server.
I'm using wired as well as wireless connections and XVID encoded videos.  Files have been encoded with several different packages including: GordianKnot, AutoGK, DIVX encoder and FairUse encoder.  With the GK encoders, I've used xvid and divx.

Here's what I'm experiencing:
Any movie that is over two hours long will freeze at a few seconds over two hours of play.

It doesn't matter what the file size is - Movies that are 1.5gig in size and over 2 hours won't play past 2 hours, and movies that are 3.5gig and less than 2 hours will play perfectly fine (so it's not a size issue - strictly a "time" issue).  After the "server not responding" error, I can hit enter again and playback WILL continue from where it left off.

Files have been encoded without QPEL and global motion as per dlink specs.

If I play a movie from the beginning, it will freeze at 2:00:xx (where xx is usually around 30 seconds).  If the movie is 2:15:00 long and I start playback at 5:00, it will freeze at 2:05:xx, so the problem is not some encoding issue that appears around 2:00:xx in any particular video clip.  I must also mention that all files I have tried play completely through with the dsm520.  The files also play completely through using twonkymedia as the media server (on either the 510 or 520 model).

The problem only exists with the specific combination of the dsm510 and windows media player 11.  I've used different routers in the mix - same result.

The error I get is a server not responding.  At the 2 hour mark, I can see the led on the dsm stop blinking (as though the sever stops sending data).  It plays for a few more seconds (buffered data), then gives the error.

I would switch media servers, but wmp11 offers an easy way to assign 'star ratings' to videos so I can allow only what I want to allow in my kids rooms.  Nothing else I've tried supports this feature.

Could someone else please let me know if they either ARE or ARE NOT having this problem using the same hardware?  If you are not having this issue, please let me know what you used to encode your videos.

The problem occurs with A1 & A2 revision and different firmware revisions including 1.02, 1.07.  Have not tried the 1.08 that I saw was just released.

Thanks...
