Can not open Ports on DGL-4500
« on: September 14, 2010, 11:07:27 AM »

Hey, I am new at this site though I have worked with computers for a good part of my life, however, I am stuck in this problem. I am trying to open a port on my router and I am having a bit of trouble doing so. I created a static IP (192.168.0.197) for the computer and put the following information on the Gaming section of the router:

utorrent       192.168.0.197       55555       55555       Always       Allow All

That should have been enough though it did not work.  I later tryed puting the computer as a DMZ and endpoint independent for UDP and TCP Endpoint filtering, yet no change.  I read around and found out about the firmware problem so I updated to the latest firmware which should had fixed the problem (at least the firmware information page said it would be fixed).  Its currently on firmware 1.23NA and yeah it is a North American router.  I can go online though I can not open any port, I do not know what to do.  Can someone please help me out?

Thank you in advance...

Igor

First, the newest versions of Utorrent have UPnP which along with the DGL's ability should make port forwarding of Utorrent not nesscary. It can be enabled at

Go to Options > Preferences > Connections, check "Enable UPnP port mapping" and check "Enable NAT-PMP port mapping."

If that doesn't work give this a try. Just a quick link I found which gives a pretty good walk through. If if brings you to a add, just click on "Skip this advertisment" in the top right of your screen.

The port generated is random, so be sure your forwarding the right one. 5555 seems pretty un-random, where did you get that port number?

I tried enabling those though no change... the port is still closed and I am still not connectable...  That guide you gave me is the same one I used when doing the portforward thing, well one of them, I looked at and followed several... I even tried a program called Simple Port Forwarding to do the job again though no luck... The port used is the same a friend of mine successfully uses in his computer... Any other advice?

Are you running a port test or just trying the application? Have you tried bypassing the router and trying? Could be your ISP. The guide mentions some ISP restrict it and you have to force it open. Is your friend on the same ISP? Keep in mind you don't want to enable UPnP AND do port forwarding. One or the other.

Both, the http://www.canyouseeme.org/ and http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ says the port is closed and sites like them say the same.  Private trackers say its closed.  Without the router it says its open and I get no problem (proving its not the ISP).  UPnP and port forwarding are NOT enabled at the same time... I already tried a bunch of different ports and no go... any other ideas?

I would probably save the config file and reset to factory, and try setting it up again. Could be some conflict with another rule you have set up, say like game fuel or virtual server?? And then if it doesn't work, reset again and load the config file.

Also, so the logs actually say its blocking the port when you try to use Utorrent?

tried it, no luck... I did not setup any other rule, the portforward is the only one. here is part of the logs:

Got me then. There no reason why it shouldn't work. I had it working with mine back when I used Utorrent. Changed over to a secure newsgroup service sometime last year. Anyone else want to take a stab at it?

Hmm, did some digging around, and I think a oldey but goodey might apply here. Do you have ADSL? If so, I am thinking you have a modem with NAT or some sort of routing function built in. In that case port forwarding won't work unless the modem is put into bridge mode or port forwarding is done there too. That would explain why direct to the modem it works, since the modem is assigning the traffic to the only computer connected to it.

It is a DSL connection I believe-it is what says on the modem's page at least. I am doing port forwarding on my modem following the site http://womni.blogspot.com/2009/12/thomson-tg508-liberando-portas.html (use google translator if you can not understand portuguese =P) though there they tell me to use the wan IP though it keeps changing and I do not know how to make it fixed, I already tried the Wireless Network Connection Properties though that only works with the router's IP... I do not know what to do... I get the  "could not see your service on 189.72.***.*** on port (55555)
Reason: No route to host" error on the http://www.canyouseeme.org/ site (I also used the modem's (192.168.1.1) and router's adress as that also (192.168.0.1) and had no luck-I get connection refused)...any ideas?

Odd that the WAN IP would keep changing. Usually ADSL uses a static IP. Your best bet is to just put your modem on bridge mode and set up the router with PPPoE or what ever standard your ISP uses. That way its just acting as a gateway and the only Network Address Translation (NAT) is done by the router. What kind of modem do you have?

If you cant set it to bridge mode you could set up DDNS which can be set up here. But then your traffic is being routed offsite, which is going to effect performance. And also, come to think of it, I dont think you can port forward from domain, since NAT is before DNS. You could find the IP of the DDNS domain, and that may work, but to be honest, this is outside my realm of expertese. Anyone here have ADSL that can comment? I don't want to mis-inform.

I set up in bridge mode some time back... though for some reason the port would not open, though, today when I went to check it out it said it was open... its weird that it would take so long... I tried opening another port today (chat port 6667) though even though I configured correctly it did not open... what do you think is causing all this delay?

Not sure, but I think is your ADSL modem. If money is no issue, ditch it and go with a modem that is a modem only, and doesn't have a intergrated router. If not possible, reply with the modems model number and I can look up the manual and see if I see anything which might conflict. Or you bring your router to someone's elses house that has it and just put your router in their place. That would tell you for sure.

Its the Thomson TG508... It says that it is a router though not a wireless router... do not know if that makes any difference... Recently I been having a lot o problems with it on bridge though... The speeds keep going up and down... at around 3am the speeds are fine (getting the full 8Mb--800kbps) though during the normal day hours I get speeds of 100kbps if not less...  Also I do not get the internet light (light on the front of the router next to the power and Ethernet light) of what is normal when it is not on bridge....Any ideas of what is wrong?

Yes, you wont get the internet light if your are in bridged mode. I have worked with issues like this and you need to make sure that your DSL/Phone line is filtered right and properly and also make sure the line comming from the outside line pole is good as well. Also do you know how far you are from the DSL hub? I ran into a problem with my buddies DSL and his house was 9000 ft beyond what he should have been for the package he was paying for. He finally got a tech out and the tech noticed this and got it fixed. My buddy has disconnects and line noise. They finally switched him to a closer hub and he's been happy since.

The preferred method if you have a DSL Modem with a built in router is to bridge it to the 4500 so you can use it's features and options. If your having speed issues at various times or noticed times, then it would be coming from the ISP side, not the 4500 router. One thing I had my buddy do it get his own DSL modem that doesn't have any router built in. You also save on rental fees too. There not spendy either.
