my cables are all purchased cat 5e cables patch cables, connected directly to switch or router.
I have basically the same layout, with an RCA Cable modem, DIR-655 (FW: 1.34NA HW: A1/A2), DGS-2208 and DNS-323, but the main difference is that I purchased all pre-made CAT6 cables (even the short ones), and all computers are connected using the 10/100/1000 network capability on the PC motherboard, or have an installed DGE-530T network card.
Also, the router only has one connection, to the switch, and the switch manages all the connections to the computers, DNS, and also one Netgear HDX101 for a very long run (at 10/100 MBps). I seem to have a lot of spare capacity, with no problems streaming from the net. (even though my ISP only provides about 14-15MBps)
I would add some pictures here of the network layout using network magic pro, and of the network tower, but have not found the means to display it here.
I have found that using cat 6 (or cat5e) cables longer than 25ft gives major reductions in speed (it will only connect at 10MBps), and interference due to proximity of power cables is a major factor.
Hope that helps
