Problem between modem and router

My modem (Motorola SB5100) provide by my cable.  When modem connect to computer.  The download speed was 17.95 Mbps and upload speed was 1.83 Mbps.  When modem go to router wan and one of port goes to my computer.  Now my download speed show 1.29 Mbps and upload speed .05 Mbps.  Something wrong with router interfere the speed.  Can you tell me why?

Did you powercycle the modem after hooking up the router?

Also check in the router QOS Engine that your uplink speed is detected correctly and that you have setup wireless security. If you have not setup security then the whole neighborhood made be sharing your bandwidth.

It also was previous posted that by setting the WAN Ethernet port to anything else than AUTO might solve this type of problem.

I just changed from the modem you are using to a SB6120 last Friday, before changing I was getting 30/2 on the SB5100, after changing to the SB6120 I was getting something like 17/1. For whatever reason, the QOS engine turned itself back on during the restart and the new modem swap out. After disabling the QOS engine I am now at 60/2.

I locked the wanport speed also.

I have the exact same problem as the original poster. BUT, I just got off the phone with tech support. She told me to set my Wan Port Speed (under Advanced -> Advanced Network) to 10mbps. My speed went up to about 9mbps, a far cry from the 25 i get using the modem alone. She told me I have to try this for 5 days and then call back if I am still having problems. I told her right away that I wouldnt be able to achieve the maximum speed offered by my provider with this setting, but she didn't want to hear it.

So is this router only able to achieve speeds of 10mbps? I manually set the Wan Port at 100mbps and I have the same problem when using the auto setting.

Hi soldout,

The connection speed, is not necessary governed by the Router and its settings, but by the adapters that the Router is connected to.

The D-Link Router has three Wireless 802.11 Protocols. There are b, g and n. "n" offers the highest speeds.

However, if you set your D-Link DIR-655 Router to 802.11n only, only the computers and other devices that have an Adapter that uses 802.11n speed and can connect to the Router.

This speed is for your Home Network only, not life out on the Internet. Your download speed is governed by the site's upload speed. This is when sharing files between friends. Your Download Speed is governed by the Upload Speed allowed by his ISProvider.

SOLVED my god, I've been working on this for 12 hours. I noticed that other computers on the network were all getting 30mbps+ on speed tests, while mine was only getting 2-3.

I went to control panel, system, device manager, then removed my network adapter from the list and restarted. I can't believe that worked. But its lookin good now...
