So I got the DNS-323 a week ago and have already setup backups for all of our systems, and ftp server, etc.  The one thing that I want to do that I can't figure out how to do is setup a streaming media server that I can access via my Sprint EVO android phone.  I would like to be able to stream all the music that is stored on the NAS over a 3g or WiFi connection.  Doesn't seem like this would be to terribly hard but I am having trouble finding a good solution.  Anyone have any ideas or experience with this?

And how is the DNS-323 suppose to jump on a "3g or WiFi connection" when it doesn't have either?

There are several ways to do this.  I use Subsonic:

This requires that you run the Subsonic server on your PC, and keep your PC on when you want to use it.

If you're going to keep your computer on 24/7, why buy a NAS?  Just store the stuff on the computer.

I have several people using several computers in my house.  It's nice to have shared storage.  Plus, the NAS is RAIDed.

I have music streaming working from my DNS 323 working on the Motorola Droid.

Download Firefly addon: ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Multimedia/dns323/Apps/dns323_Firefly_v100.zip

Login to the NAS, Got to Advanced-->Addons, and install the unzipped file above.

Run the Firefly DAAP (aka Itunes music server).

In the Android market, search for DAAP. You will find an app called DAAP something.(Don't remember the exact name). Install and run. The app will look for all music servers inside the wifi network.

To get streaming over 3G, you will have to open the required ports on your router. I have not needed to do this, so have not tried it.

I thought it was pretty clear that since I'm talking about an android phone that I want to be able to access the streaming music VIA a wireless connection.

I don't think firefly is going to work outside of the LAN.  If anyone has any evidence to support this please let me know.

With Android 2.2 (aka "FROYO") comes an app "AllShare". With this you can stream
- from any UPnP server to your phone
- from your phone to any UPnP player
- from any UPnP server to any UPnP player

Of course the server and player must support the needed formats, e.g. an audio player can't play video's, and all devices have to be in the same home network.

The app itself is pretty self-explaining, just choose the desired action, the server (if not the phone), the titles you want to stream and finally the player (if not the phone).

Yes - I do it with SAMBA over SSH from my home network to office using a loopback adapter.

My term "any UPnP player" includes any computer with UPnP player software.  Unfortunately, there isn't much windows software (and even less freeware) which supports UPnP:
- "Windows Media Player 11" supports UPnP playing and server, but has some glitches.
- "TwonkyManager" supports both UPnP server and player, but it's no freeware.
- For WinAMP there's only one UPnP plugin ("On2Share") which picks music from UPnP servers but On2Share is also no freeware; the unlicensed plugin supports only the first 10 tracks of album folders and playlists.

If anyone knows further software, post it please .

I have tried All Share but it cant see the NAS, however it works pretty good with PC as server,
I should try the firefly way mentioned,

If you don't mind being a little creative...

Using the funplug setups you can get an http server going and then a php site that parses and displays all of your music...it's nice, allows you to play albums as playlists that can be dl'ed in several formats and then streams the music over http...i'm guessing it would work on android...

and if you like it you can setup the dynamic dns and put a password on your site and access it anywhere...similar function would work for video too but i didn't finish modifying the php script before i lost interest

let me know if you guys want some more info.

its wierd I don't think the htc evo has the allshare app....
