IRC Disconnects
« on: September 22, 2010, 04:44:08 PM »

For some reason, I'm dropping from IRC but the web seems to work.

I don't know what I got but, I'd like to have this fixed ASAP

Product Page: DIR-615    Hardware Version: C1      Firmware Version: 3.12NA

Thanks, Rob

IRC have lower timeout than websites. Sure it's your router and not just your ISP there's sucky?

Hi, I've been having similar problems since updating to 3.12NA on a C1 revision router as well. I'm pretty sure it's the router firmware because IRC had been working perfectly up until that very night and I've been on a wired connection the whole time. No one else in my family has reported any problems with their connections and the ISP provided modem has been showing a constant connection.

Rob, if no one else is depending on your router and/or didn't have issues with 3.11NA you might want to roll back. That's what I would try except the rest of the family had issues with wifi connection in general with that version. :(

Otherwise you could install the dd-wrt firmware. Most people think it's way better than the dlink firmware and that it has lesser problems. Use it myself.

folks, sorry for writing on an old post.
I have a dir-615, im very satisfied with it, however i am also experiencing disconnections on irc as well as rdp.
i have the e4 firmware installed.
i also have a neighbor who i installed the same router yesterday. he wasnt experiencing disconnections with irc until i switched the router to the dlink 615.
he is also using the e4 firmware.
heres some more information.
i am using broadband (coaxal) and he is using adsl.
here in my country the Infrastructure & the isp are 2 different services required for internet usage.
we both however are using the same isp.
could i have a link possibly for the dd-wrt firmware which carbonic claims to be working?

if anyone else has some input, please add to help solve this issue for others with the same problem

Any possibility that your ISP modem is experiencing some disconnections?

What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

if everyone still have this problem please do this
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.

Hey folks,
I've been testing this issue for the past few days. here is what i was able to find out. Changing from whatever firmware i had until now has reduced the disconnections i was experiencing by a lot. I'm not sure which firmware i had before however i believe it was very similar to the new firmware i installed because i remember it ended with RU in the routers firmware page. The firmware i changed to is this one. ftp://ftp.dlink.ru/pub/Router/DIR-615/Firmware/RevE/old/DIR615E4_FW511RUB01beta19.bin
My problem still occurred however my irc disconnections were much less than before.
I then applied the changes that FurryNutz suggested and in the meantime i haven't been able to duplicate the irc disconnections. I need QoS, so i re-enabled it and i am waiting for my next irc disconnection. If irc fails to disconnect i will continue undoing the changes until i find the specific change which is causing the irc to disconnect.

thanks FurryNutz for your assistance!

heres what i did in the end. i read up on dd-wrt firmware. downloaded the firmware directly from their website and not any other website/tutorial explaining how to do it (tried that but it didnt work.) and i was able to flash my router to the dd-wrt firmware for the dir-615 vE4 router. I Flashed it 2 days ago, and i havent had 1 disconnection since. didnt have to play with any dns settings. its working like it should.

thanks folks

Sould be noted that the suggestion I made work to resolve this for OEM FW.
