Some computers & devices don't connect to DIR-655
« on: September 24, 2010, 12:06:07 AM »

I have had a D-Link DIR-655 Router for a couple of years and Window-based laptops and a desktop around my house. For some reason, I had been able to connect all of our computers via wi-fi (and the desktop via LAN) to the router, but many guest could not connect to it even when given the password. Two weeks ago, I bought a Lenovo/Windows7 for my college girl, we cannot connect if our lives depended on it! And I just got two iPod Touch brand-new edition for my other girls, and they cannot connect either... Is there any reason why certain devices do and certain devices do not connect to the router? Is there any solution?

The device is password-protected and we use the correct password. Is there any chance I configured something wrong on the router's setting over the internet?

If I reset the DIR-655 by its reset button, will it start it from scratch, allowing passwordless connection of all devices? Would it also reset the settings I set in its internet setup?

Furthermore, I am traveling in Europe now away from home. Is there any way I can still help the issue, or an easy way to guide my family through fixing over the phone?

For the Guest Zone question- by default the Guest Zone is not able to see the other computers that connected through the main part of the router.  There is a check box on the Guest Zone page to allow the Guest to see your other LAN computers.

The Connection Question-  You may have to check your Wirless security settings (WEP, WPA).

The Reset button do a factory reset, any settings that you put in there will be gone.

Thank you davevt31!

I'm sorry, I wasn't clear. I tried to connect friends while visiting us via the standard wi-fi, by giving them our correct password. Most of them could not connect, some could. But the new Lenovo laptop (our own) cannot either, and now the brand new generation of iPod Touch, of which I bought two. We did not try the "Guest Zone" at all.

Regarding checking security settings (WEP, WPA), what should it be set to in order to work with all devices?

So the "Reset" button will also get rid of password protection, security settings, etc. that I set at the router's IP address on the web?

The routers have two different security access.  the router needs a password to manage the internal settings and the WiFi security "passprhrase."  These should never be the same.

In a perfect world, the WiFi security passphrase should be using the WPA2 with AES.  Most newer WiFI devices will have all levels of WiFi security up to WPA2.   Check with each WiFi device and see their security settings so as to find which device has the lowest (WEP64 < WEP128 < WPA < WPA2.)  When you find a device that has the lowest setting (if they can not do WPA2 with AES) then this would be the level you would.

Then, with a computer connected to the 655 via a Ethernet cable, access the configurations pages.  Make sure that the MAC ID filter does not have any MAC IDs  as this will block WiFI access to any devices that do not have their wifi adapter MAC ID entered in this list.  Then, check the Wireless Security setting.
