Trouble formatting new 2TB drives
« on: September 26, 2010, 09:17:41 AM »

I am trying to setup a new DNS-323 with 2 x 2TB WD20EARS in Standard mode. I installed both drives last night and attempted to format, it took amost 2 hours and at the end I got a formatting error code 18. I tried again and got the RHS drive to format but not the left. I have since made several more attampts and get different error codes each time: 118, 119, 121. (Is there a list of error codes available?)

Now the unformatted drive is not recognized by webUI. If I install the drive in the right side drive bay (with or without the other drive present) the HD LED on the front of the DNS-323 does not light up. If I install the drive on the left side bay, the LED does light up. The webUI cannot see it in either bay, regardless of how many drives are installed.

Any advice?

What firmware are you running?  You need at least 1.08, if you don't have it, install that first.

The unit came with 1.08 installed.

Update: After numerous factory resets and drive swapping the 323 now recognizes both drives again. I am now back to the original problem. One drive appears formatted, the other is not. When I start up the WebUI it asks if I want to format the new drive, if I continue it gets to about 5% complete and then gives me an error 121.

Any ideas?

Well, I'd take that drive out and test it on a PC using the manufacturer's diagnostics.  It may be a bad drive.

Is there no list of error codes available? Anyone know what formatting error 121 is?

I don't find error codes either, so probably testing the drive is the best option.

Unfortunately I do not have a PC with a SATA interface available to test the drives right now.

After several more swaps and resets, neither drive is recognized in the right bay, while either drive is recognized in the left as per the LED on the DNS-323. However, neither are recognized according to the WebUI in either position.

My advice would be to return both drives. They are not supported in this NAS (read the forum sticky regarding EARS)

Thanks Jamie, I just noticed the drive models, good call! :)

I will consider that but there are plenty of users running these drives without issue. The main issues with them seem to be stability of the RAID setup (I will be running standard) and read/write errors due to misaligned partitions - however there is an easy workaround for that posted here and elsewhere. This seems like a different problem.

Well it's possible you have a dud drive. Without the appropriate hardware to test it, returning and purchasing a supported drive seems like the best option.

Is that a typo, or am I just not following you?

Does the other drive work in both slots? Have you pushed the drive in hard enough? I recently installed a new drive and it wasn't recognised because I was too gentle pushing it in.

Yes that was a typo, I edited it.

Sometimes the other drive is recognized in the right slot, sometimes not. I should be able to test the disks in a PC tonight so that should shed some light.

For those of you waiting in anticipation for the outcome...

I tested both drives in a PC - one worked, one didn't. I exchanged the drive that didn't work and now have two 2TB WD Caviar Green working great (after following instructions for properly formatting for 4K sectors). One issue that was complicating things is that I really have to forcefully insert the drive in the RHS bay to get it seated properly.
