Ok, let me just ask. I think this box is quite wonderful, especially at the current street prices. It plays everything it promises to do, at least everything I have tried. One thing would definitely make it cross into the near perfect category: the ability to play what I am reading is one of the most advanced compression out there: MPEG 4 Advanced Video Coding, aka H264, or MPEG4 Part 10. This is the format for the iPod video and Directv HD, among others. I think that a DVD juke box re-coded in AVC would probably be the most efficient, space wise, for a given quality.
Would D-Link even consider releasing an H264 decoder in the 510 as part of a future firware upgrade? Would its performance be ok for some HD, say 720p? Is there enough horsepower to even consider this in software?
Speaking for myself, I would say that I would be ok to stick with the existing container (MPEG2) if it meant getting this new video decoder sooner. Of course, one can dream and also request that the .mkv container be supported as well. The MPEG4 container seems less appealing as it does NOT support AC3/Dolby Digital.
PS: I am aware that MPEG4 Part 2/ASP is supported, Divx/Xvid and all, but the compression is supposed to be somewhat inferior to AVC.
PPS: I am also aware that there are transcoding UPNP AV servers out there, but I want to eventually migrate to an always-on NAS with UPNP AV built in, and not keep an always-on PC.
Best to everybody, great forum.
