Wall mount ?
« on: September 28, 2010, 06:05:54 AM »

Hi all !

I just got my new DIR-685 yesterday and so far, so good. But one of the main reasons for me to buy it was that I need to wall mount it.
According to several reviews I read, it is possible to wall mount it, but exactly how is this supposed to be done ?
There is no special hardware included (brackets etc), nor are there any holes in the back of it that I can use to hang it on screws/hooks.

Cheers & TIA !

You could use a small shelf? :-\ or you could have a right angle bracket and place it in on or/in-between the stand and use something to firmly secure it with the back end of the stand piece. It hard to explain but that what you could only do, if you do manage to wall mount it. You have to remember that the ports are at the back, which doesn't give you much room.

You could also place a wire through the top heat vent and loop it so you can hang it up like a picture frame  ;D but obviously that will look cheesy......

I've check that some review do say it wall mountable, but that is in-correct cause you can't purchase any additional add-on nor the D-Link manual say so.

Unless I'm wrong....  ;)

Thanks, yes, it seems like the reviews are wrong.
Darn, it was one big thing I really wanted with it.
Well, well, I'll see what I can do with a small shelf or home-made bracket stuff.
Apart from this, it is really a nice piece, works perfect with sharing my USB-connected Epson CX5600 MFP (both printing and scanning  ;D, my almost new Synology DS110j can only handle printing, not scanning  :-\).

Other thing: Is there a newer HDD-compatibility list available ? In the one I've found online, only one 500GB disk is listed (a Seagate). Is the DIR-685 really that picky about what HDD´s it accept ?

Cheers !

Hi, TokTias. I'm interested in all that you said: wall mount, HDD and USB sharing..... I was planning a little shelf too.... I'll replace my DIR-655, that is wall mounted now... really a shame D-Link didn't realize wall mount option... About HDD I'm plaaning to buy a (cheap) 500 GB Samsung HDD... for USB sharing, you spoke about scanning... I have a Samsung SCX-4600 scanning/printer that uses a sw called SmartThru4 to make scans... Can I use it with DIR-685, maybe? Thx

I don't think D-Link could to able to test every HDD out there, but you can place in anything in there. I put in a 1.8 HDD with a 2.5 converter and it works just fine. Don't have to follow the "HDD-compatibility" you can place any HDD less than 9.7 in height. D-Link kinda gave up on the list anyway, don't you think they would have put a Non-HDD-compatibility? Just make sure that you remove all partition on the HDD else it won't reformat. Check out NAS Speed forum http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=14263.0, someone tried a Western Digital 500GB. Though honestly it all should work, performance is a differ matter.........

For the USB ports you must install D-Link SharePort Utility, this will act like a switch for your device on the DIR-685.  This allows the devices connected to the router act like the USB are connected directly to your computer, provides less compatibility issues. But the flaw is one computer is allowed to access the USB directly at a time, the SharePort will just enable and disable the access. If you thinking of using your USB Storage as a share media for everyone at the same time, I don't think the current firmware allows you to do it unless you have the SharePort Utility installed on every system.

Hi again !

Yeah, I had a feeling that the list was not really "alive" anymore.

As you can see in my previous, I managed to make SharePort work perfectly well, at least to the limit of what a simple Epson MFP printer fr home usage can handle (I know it can't be a true network connected scanner without need to "hijack" it using Shareport or similar applications).

So for the moment, I a quite happy with the SharePort solution, although the solution offered by my Synology NAS was better (acting as a Print Server and therefore share the printer properly in the LAN), but it was not possible to share the scanner that way.

Cheers !

Well, there is some kind of clue to put USB to work? I connect a printer or a pen drive but nothing happens.... SharePort Utility isn't able to detect devices.... Ths
