Author Topic: Help!!! DIR-685 internet speed problem (only 40Mbit/s on 120Mbit/s line)  (Read 23425 times)

Recently my provider upgraded my internet speed to 120Mbit down and 10Mbit up.
Because my old dlink gaming router had a 100Mbit wan port, I could not use the new internet speed. Therefore I upgraded to a DLink DIR-685.
This has a 1000Mbit wan, so it should work.

After I setup the router and connected to the net, I did a speed test. And indeed, it was at 120Mbit.
However, after a few hours, I checked again. Suddenly it was at around 40-50Mbit and it didn't improve.
When I do a router reset, it is at the 120Mbit again, but it drops after a few minutes.

To do some testing, I disconnected al other devices from the router and went through various settings. But I had no luck.
I then upgraded the firmware (to version 2.00), but still no result.
When I plug in my wan cable directly to the computer, I have instant 120Mbit/s speed.

At the moment I'm out of ideas, so that's why I'm writing here.
Does anybody have the same router and problem? Or does anybody know a possible solution? Is my router maybe defective (could it be a heat issue)?

Many thanks in advance!

Thanks for the tip.
Unfortunately that's already disabled (default setting). I tried enabling and disabling it again, but that didn't help. It does look like it could have something to do with it...

I made a small screenshot today, to see the speed difference. Something is very wrong here:

Try turning off every settings (Make a back-up)
+Firewall SPI
+UPnP
+Etc

Or set the WAN port speed to 1000mps
Advance>Advance Network>Wan Port Speed>1000mps only

Sorry not much I can help as I don't have a very fast connection....  :'(

Tried all those things... Didn't work.
Checked al my cables too. They're Cat6 cables, so should be fine.

I guess the router is faulty. Really hope that DLink wil contact me soon. Haven't heard anything from their support department yet.

Seems like a firmware fault, I do wonder what will D-Link Support do...

Until now I haven't received any reply from dlink support.
This is taking to long for me, so I'm returning it to the shop.
They gave me a reply within half an hour and will solve the problem for me.

So much for a good dlink support...  :-[

Still no support from dlink.
However I did receive a new one from the shop I bought it.
And what do you think.......... same problem.
This is ridiculous  :(

I have a feeling it has something to do with the QOS engine.
After a while, when the speed has dropped to about 50Mbit/s, I enable and disable the QOS engine and it's up to 120Mbit/s again... Eventually dropping to 50Mbit/s.
So I have a feeling the DIR-685 QOS engine is broken somehow (even when it's not switched on).

I had this problem when qos was NOT enabled...
Where can this version be downloaded? I had the v2.00B01 installed.

Just upgraded to a 100Mbit service and I can confirm this issue still exists.

Speedtest shows that download speeds of around 30Mbit but right after a reboot it's back to 90Mbit.

Can you let us know how your router is set up?
What HW version is your router?
What FW version is currently loaded?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Hi FN,

Thanks for the reply....see my responses below.

This is a Docsis 3 cable service but the ISP supplied router/modem is in bridge mode allowing the DIR-685 to do all the smarts.

I guess it was never an issue until now as my previous Docsis 2 service was only 30 Mbit.

Can you let us know how your router is set up?
What HW version is your router?
A1
What FW version is currently loaded?
2.01 - Wed 09 Mar 2011
What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
Cable
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
Modem with built in router
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
Cisco EPC3925

Yes thats true. The Cisco EPC3925 router module also suffers from a very small NAT table which can cause reboots once the NAT table is full.  To resolve this I'm using the Cisco in bridge mode and the DIR-685 as the router.  The DIR-685 also has the better wireless transmitter so I'd prefer to keep this configuration if the bandwidth issue can be resolved.

I'm not hopeful though and will probably start looking for a replacement in the near future.

Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.
All done already except for the firewall setting you mentioned.  I don't see that option in my firewall settings but do have SPI enabled and no DMZ.
Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

cheers,
Garry.

How are you connecting to the router, wired or wireless, when doing speed tests?

How are the cables between the devices, router and modem? Some in box cables are very cheap and not mfr'd well. I prefer and recommend using new CAT6 cabling. shortest length between the modem and router as possible. I use a 1footer on mine and understand that not everyone can do that.

Do you see the same speeds if your directly connected to the ISP modem with a wired PC?

Maybe someone can remote in using teamviewer.com and review your router settings with you.

All connections are pre-tested CAT5E cables.  CAT6 would be nice I guess but I'll consider once we actually have Gb internet connections available here in Australia.  It's probably still 4-5 years though. :p

In any case....I'm discounting the cable type as the being the culprit as a reboot of the DIR-685 is what returns the service to the expected connection speeds.

I have tried cabling directly to the ISP supplied Cisco router/modem and speeds are around 5% better than when the DLINK has just been rebooted.

So to summarise I get around 85-90Mbit when cabled directly to the Cisco.  80-85Mbit from the DIR-685 once it's been rebooted.  And around 35-40Mbit from the DIR-685 if it hasn't been rebooted for a while.
