need help getting modem to connect to internet
« on: October 04, 2010, 03:12:29 PM »

I have a cable modem, the Motorolla SURFboard model: SB6120 and my router is a Dlink model:DGL-4500. I've went through all of the steps to connect. I am running via ethernet cable directly from the modem right now, but when i connect the modem to the router and try to connect wirelessly, it keeps saying "establishing connection....." I changed my Comcast modem to the SURfboard modem today and the router was functioning correctly before i changed the modem. I'm using a MacBook Pro.

I'm using the same this man...Did you register the new cable modem with your ISP? Sometimes it just takes a wired connection to the modem and it should automatically bring up a web page when you open a browser. After that, Make sure the cable modem is connected from the Internet port to the WAN port on the 4500 router, not the 4 LAN ports in back of the 4500. I would then do a wired connection to the 4500 from the MBP and make sure you can log in to the 4500's web page, 192.168.0.1. Once you log in you should go to Status/Device Info page and make sure you are getting an IP address and DNS addressing in the WAN section. You should be seeing IP addresses here that are coming from the modem. Also make sure the Basic/Internet/Manual is set up for DHCP and enter in the DNS ip addresses from the Device Info/WAN section that you were looking at before if they are not automatically filled in.

Most common problem when hooking up a router:

1. Did not do a home network power cycle.
A. Unplug and/or turn off all equipment. PC/laptops/modems/router/etc
B. Make sure ethernetis connected from the modem to the grey port marked "Internet".
C. Plug in modem power. Wait until atleast 4 solid lights.
D. Plug in router power. Wait 60 seconds
E. Turn on computers.

2. The modem isn't provisioned. If your computer or router gets a IP starting with 172 or some other 3 number range, this usually means you need to call your ISP.

3. Router isn't set to DHCP mode. Usually because the software couldnt get a IP so detected a static IP. This in turn was usually caused by 1 or 2.
