Unpowered PC corrupts LAN-signal

Hi,

After setting up my home network i am starting to experince lag on the tv-signal and other LAN connections (Sonos, NAS etc).
After troubleshooting I've noticed that it seems to be the ethernet connection to my PC that causes the conflict.
When the PC is turned off, I get the lag. But as soon as I turn on the PC (even before the windows loading screen) everything is fine. If I disconnect the ethernet cable from the PC everything is fine too. I do not experience any internet problems on my PC.

How can a turned off computer corrupt my router signal?  ???

Turn the switch on the power supply off or unplug the PC and see what happens? There is an auxiliary +5V power supply inside the main power supply that is on even when the PC is off. aside from being used to power up the PC when you push the power button on the case, it also supplies power for the wake on LAN feature. Your onboard NIC may still be powered up waiting for the wake on lan signal, even though the PC is off. The easy way to tell is if the network activity led on the network card is still on and flashing when the PC is off. Even so it shouldn't be interfering with your LAN when the PC is off unless there is something wrong with it. One thing you could try is to go into the BIOS settings and disable the wake on lan and wake on ring settings if they are enabled.

A PC in OFF still consumes power (unless you unplug the wall socket). I suspect that the PC is not grounded well enough and has current leakage. Are there some parts of the PC (mostly on the metal parts on the back) that make your finger tingle?

alphanumeric: Thanks for the info - you were absolutely right about the auxillary power supply. I unplugged the PC and everything was fine again (same with power switch on psu).
Today I have just installed a new motherboard/CPU/RAM unit in the same case. Nothing has changed and I stille experience lag on the network. I will try to change BIOS settings and see what happens.

EddiZ: No tingling - but I will try another power socket and cabling - thanks for the suggestion!
