iPod Touch 4G "N" idle activity
« on: October 10, 2010, 05:07:34 PM »

I've been using the DIR-655 for a year now with my 3rd generation 802.11g iPod Touch and it works great on the 1.34NA firmware.

I have the DIR-655 set up as "g" and "n", and have used it in the past with an "n" laptop on the older 1.21 firmware.  So I know they both work.

However, once a guest shows up with a new iPod Touch 4th Generation "n" capable device, some odd network activity happens that I can't explain while the device is in sleep (screen off).

It seems that every minute or two, the WLAN activity light will flash for a few minutes and then stop like it's sending or receiving lots of data.  This keeps repeating unless you actually power off the iPod, i.e. hold the power button down.

I put the DIR-655 in "g" only mode, and everything works normally.  The WLAN only flashes when there is normal network activity.

I checked the WLAN statistics during the time of this high network activity, and the packet counters do not go up more than what a normal broadcast would do.  So, the DIR-655 is doing something that does not count as packets.

Anyone here with a 4th generation iPod Touch (and 802.11n enabled) that might know what is going on?  My guess is some sort of sync bit 'feature' that keeps going while the iPod sleeps, i.e. a laptop is shut off completely so you'd never see the same oddities.

I'm keeping mine at 802.11g for now because I like to see when my WLAN is actually busy doing something.  I know that for web surfing and email, "n" won't give you much benefit (except for perhaps better range and a bit longer battery life.)

Thanks!
