Should it take this long to copy files?!
« on: October 20, 2010, 08:50:50 AM »

I have two Western Digital Caviar Green WD10EACS 1TB 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5 in my DNS-323.

I've been running these since Nov '08 without any real issues. I set it up as RAID 1 and my firmware is 1.05.

It seems to be getting slower when I save files to it so I tried a little experiment to see how it slow it was.

I tried to copy a 2.6 GB avi file from one folder to another (both on the DNS), it took over half an hour but it worked. This doesn't seem right at all.

Then I tried to run a diagnostics on it but hit a wall. I tried Data Lifeguard but it didn't find the DNS on my network.

I'm lost as for what to do. Any ideas?

Much thanks!!

keep in mind the difference between copying and moving.

Moving just changes a files information in the file allocation table. This takes a second or less.

Copying, depending on how you do it, usually means reading the file, transmitting the back to your PC, then writing it to the new location. This obviously takes longer and is dependant on many factors.

Try running NASTester and post the results here.

Looks like you're running this on a 100mbit connection, is that correct?  You should do better than that using gigabit.

I don't get the speeds many do, for whatever reason.  Part of it may be I'm running EXT3, which does slow the box down.  I've done tests and the processor is at 100% when I'm transferring files, so I suspect that's all there is.

Here's what I get, this is using a gigabit network.  It's not my network, since on the same switch, my Synology NAS does way better, about three times the speed.

Here's the DNS-323 test.

Running warmup...
Running a 500MB file write on drive y: twice...
Iteration 1:     11.98 MB/sec
Iteration 2:     12.59 MB/sec
------------------------------
Average (W):     12.28 MB/sec
------------------------------
Running a 500MB file read on drive y: twice...
Iteration 1:     14.94 MB/sec
Iteration 2:     15.52 MB/sec
------------------------------
Average (R):     15.23 MB/sec
------------------------------

For reference, this is my Synology DS209 NAS, so my network obviously isn't the bottleneck here.

Running warmup...
Running a 500MB file write on drive y: twice...
Iteration 1:     30.73 MB/sec
Iteration 2:     33.09 MB/sec
------------------------------
Average (W):     31.91 MB/sec
------------------------------
Running a 500MB file read on drive y: twice...
Iteration 1:     51.85 MB/sec
Iteration 2:     56.31 MB/sec
------------------------------
Average (R):     54.08 MB/sec
------------------------------

Yes I ran it from an older PC. Here are results using my laptop which does have a gigabit port (using a 5e cable):

Running warmup...
Running a 200MB file write on drive Z: 5 times...
Iteration 1:     13.74 MB/sec
Iteration 2:     14.16 MB/sec
Iteration 3:     13.95 MB/sec
Iteration 4:     13.83 MB/sec
Iteration 5:     13.73 MB/sec
------------------------------
Average (W):     13.88 MB/sec
------------------------------
Running a 200MB file read on drive Z: 5 times...
Iteration 1:     12.72 MB/sec
Iteration 2:     15.46 MB/sec
Iteration 3:     15.26 MB/sec
Iteration 4:     13.94 MB/sec
Iteration 5:     14.48 MB/sec
------------------------------
Average (R):     14.37 MB/sec
------------------------------

So based on this I shouldn't be worrying about my hardware?

Looks pretty much like what I get, is that using EXT3?

I don't believe so, not sure how to check...

I think what I need to do is get a true backup drive for my data then get current on firmware (still at 1.05). Up to this point I've been using the 323 as my back up unit for my PC's on my network.

If you're still on 1.05, you're using EXT2.
