Cannot Name Folders or Rename
« on: October 22, 2010, 05:41:10 AM »

When I create a folder on my DNS-323/Volume_1 I am unable to give it a name instead it just comes in as "new folder". Furthermore I cannot rename them after they are created. In each scenario I get a window with the following message....

"The X:\ folder does not exist. The file may have been moved or deleted. Do you want to create it?
[Yes button]    [No button]

The X:\ is the drive mapping for my dns-323. I cannot understand why I cannot rename, everything that I have copied to the NAS is there......I just cannot name new folders I create or rename existing ones.

Can anyone help? I am running Windows Vista64 on an HP Pavillion laptop dv9000

When you rename your new folder, hit refresh first to show the change. I've seen this happen before, but not lately.

What I think is happening is you create your folder and it's called "New Folder". You rename it, but you don't see the change until you refresh. If you try to rename "New Folder" you'll get a message to say it doesn't exist (because you've renamed it). This would also apply to files. Lets say you delete a file, but the display doesn't refresh. Then you delete it again and you'll get an error that the file doesn't exist.

I don't know what causes the "not updating/needing a refresh issue" but I don't have the issue anymore.

I have another system at my office that runs XP Pro, I will try it. I suspect that this could be a Vista issue! I will let you know.

My XP Pro machine works without any trouble. My HP/Vista Ultimate laptop cannot create folders or files that have unique names. when you create a folder it asks you if you want to rename it and you select yes then it says it cant rename it. I cannot even open a excel spreadsheet on my dns-323 and save that same document back. Does anyone have an idea???????????

So to confirm/recap, you can create files and folders on your NAS, but you can't rename them and you can't save excel documents??  :-\

There was an issue with excel files that was fixed in newer firmware versions. Which one are you running?
