how to replace hardwired computer
« on: October 22, 2010, 08:51:46 AM »

I have my DIR-655 working for several years. Desktop connected to router with cable and a
laptop that uses wireless. Everything works well. Now I purchased a new computer to
replace the desktop. I want to connect the new computer to the router using a cable in
place of the existing desktop computer. can i just remove the cable from the current PC and connect
it to the new pc? or do i need to reconfigure something in the router?

Yep, just swap the cables and you should be fine.

If you have set up MAC address filtering, you should disable it while getting the new system up and running then reenable it using the new MAC address of the new system.

Another consideration - if you set up DHCP leases for your old rig to have a static address, you'll want to go update that by deleting the old lease and assigning that old IP to the new MAC address.

Other than that, it's a plug-and-play provided you aren't MAC filtering etc as mentioned previously.

If you haven't really done any customizing on the router's configuration, you can go lazy mode.  Factory reset the puppy and set it up again (takes all of 5 minutes)
