New Atheros Driver Released April, 2008
« on: April 09, 2008, 10:41:07 AM »

Hi All,

Can anyone shed any light on the driver by Atheros - Network - D-Link DWA-552 XtremeN Desktop Adapter
Date last published: 4/7/2008
Download size: 350 KB
Atheros Network software update released in April, 2008
System Requirements
Recommended CPU: Not specified.
Recommended memory: Not specified.
Recommended hard disk space: Not specified.

This driver was found through Microsoft / Windows Update in Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 search through Windows Update / Custom.

I searched on the D-Link Site and the latest released Driver goes back to 1.30 and 2007.

Do we install or not?

Because the card itself uses the Atheros chipset that may be specific to the driver recommended by windows update, then you may want to use the driver and it may work fine for you.  Just be aware that we cannot support the card unless it is using a D-Link specific driver.

Hi All,

We have a problem, then, because I am presently using the D-Link Driver version 1.30, but when I look in Device Manager for the Network Card, the Driver for it, was not / is not supplied by D-Link at all, but by Atheros in Driver Details.

It saids "D-Link DWA-552 ExtremeN Desktop Adapter" in Device Manager.
Driver Provider: D-Link
Driver Date: 07/23/2007
Driver Version: 6.0.3.107

But in Driver Details:
ar5416.sys
Provider: Atheros Communication, Inc.
File Version: 6.0.3.107
Copyright: 2001-2006 Atheros Communications, Inc. All

So I don't understand. Is the one found in Windows Update, a legitimate upgrade path?

The driver you found on the Windows update is a valid update path. D-Link is getting into the habit of letting Windows Certify our products for use in their OSes.

dlinkdudes posts have been deleted regarding the subject. If the Microsoft drivers don't work for anybody we will get them changed. That isn't the case here because they work in at least one of our environments.
