What is the little button on the side of the modem for?  I was moving it around while it was on and accidentally hit the button and it blinked for about 2 minutes.  I cannot find any documentation on it in my box.  It looks like a refresh symbol er something...

Are you talking the square button on the 4500 router? If so thats the Wireless Protected setup button I believe.

are you referring to the 4500 router? Just to confirm that the 4500 is a router and not a modem.

That button is explained on page 6 of the users manual thats on the CD or on DLinks download site for this router.

i still don't understand how or what it does

If you have WiFi enabled and setup, along with Protected WiFi options on the router set up and if you have WiFi enabled devices like a wireless printer that also has Protected WiFi set up. Then what you do is hit the button on the router once, this sends our a signal for say your wireless printer to pick up. Then you hit the button on the printer. This starts communications between the 2 devices and automatically sets up the connection between the two. Once it's connected wirelessly, then you would go to the PC and set it up on the pc normally following the printer mfr setup instructions. Just all depends on what WiFI devices you have that support this Protected WiFi setup. I don't have any so I disable it in the router. This is not to be confused with WiFi itself. These are separate options, however Protected WiFi setup is dependent upon WiFi itself being enabled if your going to use it.
