  • Hello!

OKey, so I'm from Sweden. I get my internet connection from the biggest ISP in Sweden (Telia). It's ADSL 24 Mbit that I get from them.

My usual speed is;
Download: 17 Mbit
Upload: 2Mbit

The problem;
The problem I have started about 2 weeks ago. It seems that my connection drops (every 2-10 minutes). Well I'm not sure if it dies and then reconnects or if the speed just drops so low that the internet isn't functioning as it should.

Anyways, the other side of the problem is that since 2 weeks ago my download speed is about 1-4 Mbit. There isn't a problem with my upload speed.

Now it's really slow to surf the net. MSN Messenger doesn't work for more then 2-5 minutes because the drops in connection.

I'm using a wired connection to the router. There's also another computer wired to it, a Xbox 360 (wired) and finally a laptop which uses the wireless connection.

I didn't change anything in the router when this began. Had been running without a problem for months. So I find it very strange. Updated the firmware to the latest one; 1.31EU.

The solutions I've tried;
- Called my ISP (Telia), they said that there's no problem from them. They are sending me my 24Mbit.
- Tried to connect to the internet without the router (directly thorugh the modem). It worked fine.
- Set the right time in the router.

My router configuration;

Enable Traffic Shaping: Enabled
Automatic Uplink Speed : Enabled
Measured Uplink Speed : 2523 kbps
Connection Type : Automatic
Enable QoS Engine : Enabled

Advanced Network;
Enable UPnP: Enabled
Enable WAN Ping Respond: Disabled

WAN Port Speed: Automatic
Enable Multicast Streams: Disabled

Wireless;

Channel Width : 20MHz

WISH : Active
Wi-Fi Protected Setup : Enabled/Configured
(Shouldn't be a problem with this because my computer is wired and the problem is still there)

So is there anyone out there who can help me?  ???

Thanks in advance and excuse me for my bad english!  :P

Set the wireless to auto 20/40 and then try changing the channel.

What would that help when my computer is wired and not wireless? Anyway that didn't work.  :'(

Things to try:

Try different cable(s)..Cat7 recommended

Problem sounds like it is not in the router, it is in the workstation NIC.  Check for driver update and go over every setting for the NIC.  The 655 does not "play nice" with every brand of NIC out there so AUTO may not be a good choice.  You may have to manually set NIC and Router to what you want.  Make darn sure you are set to FULL duplex.

Disable the Dynamic Fragmentation on the QOS Engine page.

Dynamic Fragmentation
This option should be enabled when you have a slow Internet uplink. It helps to reduce the impact that large low priority network packets can have on more urgent ones by breaking the large packets into several smaller packets

Seems like clarification is required here:

Are you saying that you see these speed issues affect more than one wired device?

If so, are the issues the same between wired devices, or are some affected differently?

You state you have one wireless device.  Does it have similar issues also?

Considering the above responses, you might want to provide details of the different NIC cards your wired devices are using.  Also, are your cables store bought?  How long are the cables to each device?

My advice, since you state that your problems only started recently, since which time you made no settings changes to your router, that you look outside the router for your solution also.  It may well be your router has developed a fault, but is less likely.  Have you made any changes to your network equipment at all?  Updated NIC drivers?  Used different cabling?  Moved equipment to different mains sockets?  Added surge protection or battery backups?  Not suggesting any of these are your issue, but helping you to eliminate possibilities on this forum thread.

If the above yields no solution, perhaps look at your router logs and look for repeated warnings or errors.

It affects every computer/console/cellphone in the household. Doesn't matter if it's wired or wireless.

It's the same issue on every pice of machine.

The cables are about 2-5 metres long (don't know how many feet that is, 6-15 feet maybe?). :-P

Don't know what a NIC is. Nothing that I know has been changed. Asked my father if he changed something but he didn't.

Sorry for the late reply, but my connection has been working pretty good for some days but is now bad again.  :P

The problem isn't just occuring om my wired computer, but on all computers/consoles/cellphones in the households. Doesn't matter if it's wired or wifi. Tried without the router and it worked like a charm, but I need a router, so that's not a solution.

I'll try that later. Thanks.

OK - NIC=Network Interface Controller.  It's the device in your computer that connects to a network.  Easiest way to figure out which one you use on your computer (assuming you use Windows):
On an Admin account....
1. Right Click on My Computer/Computer on your desktop and choose Manage
2. Select Device Manager in the left pane of the window that appears (Computer Management)
3. Look in the main panel.  There should be an option for Network devices or similar (depends which Win version)
4. In most cases, two devices will be present (wired and wireless).  These are your NIC's.

One more troubleshooting tip.  Try testing your network one device at a time.  You may have one network device causing the resets.  Start with all wired ports unplugged and all wireless devices shut down and unpowered.  Start your main computer and plug in (if wired) to the router.  If the first device you test seems to have the issue, unplug from the router or shutdown (for wireless) and try adding others in the same methodical way.

Hope that helps.
