Once the key has been established, I can not read the key (all ****).

I am adding a new device and need to set the wireless network key in the new device.  I am using WEP 128 bit encoding.  How do I see the actual characters ? ? ??  ?

Your best bet is to simply assign a new key that you have written down elsewhere.

I have five other computers (including 2 laptops) that are already in the system.  I'm afraid that putting in a new key will screw up an already working system.

Too many times have I "fixed" something that was not broken and spent hours "fixing" the new problem.

Dear Dumbfounded,

Unfortunately that may be the best best.

Personally I would change the SSID at the same time so you don't have to worry about wireless profiles.  Just go computer to computer and join the new network with the new key without fuss.

And break that rule that all geeks are always going on about and leave a sticky note with your SSID and WEP key under your router, anyone with physical access could get in anyhow.

I know it's not pretty, but it's gotta be done.

Just use the "Add Wireless Device WITH WPS (WI-FI PROTECTED SETUP) Wizard" then select "MANUAL"; it will display the key there!
