Intermitent loss of internet connection
« on: November 02, 2010, 01:22:00 PM »

Guys,
I read some of the other posts regarding the intermittent loss of connection but none seemed to describe my problem completely.
Unlike most of the posts I read I am using Verizons DSL service (3Mbs) and unlike most of the other posts my modem does not stop functioning but my router does.
No internet connectivity, no network connectivity. I must manually disconnect my router, wait 30 seconds and plug it back in. Once it powers up and boots, logs in et cetera, i will have a great connection for approximately 36 hours. Then the cycle begins again. Over and over.
Interestingly, the clock on the unit always defaults to 5:33pm when the unit locks up although it is rarely that exact time.
I spoke w tech support but got nowhere. The tech barely spoke English and kept telling me to make sure  my unit was plugged in and powered up. this went on for over an hour before i gave up.
Please help, I'm a bout to toss this thing out the window!

Hmm sounds like the unit might actually be locking up. Here are some things to try.

1. Turn off NTP server Here

2. First check(for events around the last lock up), then turn off all logs and clear logs found Here

3. If still having the issue,  try disabling UPnP found Here

The logs will be helpful though. See what the say around the time the router locks out. Anything other then that is guess work.

Now if you CAN ping your router, and other PC's on your network, then yea, I am +1 Furry's idea. It just sounded like to me you were saying the router itself was not reacting, like you couldnt even log into it unless your power cycled it.

Does your DSL modem have a internal router? This has been known to cause issues with having a 2nd router on the line. If so, you might ask you ISP to bridge the dsl modem to the 4500 router so it can do all the network trafficking and you get the benefits of using it's features.

Thanks Guys,
Yes, i can not ping or log on to the router without power cycling it once it craps out.
I did or confirmed the following:
1. The DSL moden and the 4500 are bridged
2. NTP server was not active.
3. Cleared Logs
4. Disabled UPnP and ill follow up with the outcome in two days or so.

Thanks again! ;D

What current FW version is loaded on the 4500 router when you can get to it? If it's v1.21NA, there is a known issue with this version. Might have to update to v1.22 which fixed it or v1.23.

Well just don't clear logs, disable them too. Basically, if the memory on the router gets full, it can crash. Usually it resets when it does, but I guess it could freeze up. I have see conflicting rules or routers creating paradoxs that cause this. Also gamefuel can cause it with some torrent clients. So what were doing is trying to take strain off the memory buffer and see if it still happens.
