DNS-323 and 2TB Drives

I know people have been talking about this for a while but I still can't find any similar situation as mine. So I'd appreciate if you could help me with this.

I use DNS-323 with two Maxtor DiamondMax 500GB for over a year now and everything works perfectly. I recently updated its firmware to 1.09 and didn't notice any change.

Yesterday I tried to replace one of the drives to a 2TB one, a Seagate Barracuda 2TB and just can't make it work. I tried with or without the jumper (1.5GB/S or 3.0GB/S), one 2TB and one 500GB or one 2TB alone,... still no veil.

Today I bought a Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB since I found it on the compatible drive list, but it still doesn't work! I tried all those combinations again and didn't make any difference.

So what could be the problem? Firmware? I saw version 1.08 supports 2TB Disks and can't believe my 1.09 doesn't support it. Could this be the reason?

But I did learn something new from my unsuccessful upgrade: My Maxtor 500GB came with 1.5GB/S jumper on and I used them as is all these time. Today I removed it and found everything still works fine and speed maybe higher. So now I know DNS-323 support 3.0GB/S drives!

Could anybody tell me how to make my 2TB drives work? Thanks!

Try this:

1. insert the two new drives and make REALLY sure that they are FULLY inserted up to the end into the NAS. I encountered similar problems and found that I have simply not inserted the drives tight enough for the SATA-plug to connect correctly.

2. if this alone does not help try a factory reset and then you should be able to format the new drives.

3. check whether your drives are affected by the 4k-sector-problem and deal with this as you like. Of course this has nothing to do with your original problem and is just optional after you make the drives work.

I just ordered some 2TB Samsung Spinpoints F4 from Newegg as they had them priced at $59.99 a piece with free shipping this AM. (Sorry, that deal is dead) When they come in, I'll swap them with me 1TB Spinpoint F3's and see if the DNS-323 will take them.

Just to share my experience.  I'm running the 2TB LP's 5900 RPM.  No jumper installed.  Only a small number of VIA and SiS controllers were affected by the Auto Speed Negotiation issue.  Not the case with the 323, so no need to force SATA150.  The only difference I am aware of between the Seagate LP's and XT's is 5900 vs 7200 RPM.    

Due perform a factory reset as grixx suggested.  Resetting the NAS will have zero effect the data on your 500's.  Of course, carefully insert the disks as suggested and ensure each is firmly seated.  You will be prompted to format the first time you log into the 323 after performing the reset with new disks installed.  I have been very pleased with my 323 and these disks.

Can the OP describe what they mean by "doesn't work"? There are thousands of potential issues and resolutions.

Thanks everybody and it works now!

I followed grixx's instructions to reset and format. I didn't do this before because I didn't even know they need to be formatted (I don't remember I ever did my 500GB).

I also didn't know I have to log into the 323 to do all these as shadowsports suggested...

To answer gunrunnerjohn's question,it's a Seagate Barracuda XT model ST32000641AS, part # 9GV168-301. I only see its 1.5TB version on the compatible drive list. So now you know 2TB version works too!

My last question is: since this is a network drive, speed (7200/5400) matters or not? I had this question when I bought that "green" drive because I believe the bottleneck is at the network cable connection, even this green one should be fast enough. Do you agree?

The bottleneck with this device is actually the 500mhz ARM processor.  This is a consumer level device, and is not meant to be lightning fast.  For that, you have to spend quite a bit more $

Still, I paid about $140 for mine, and I consistently get 12-15MB/s write and slightly faster read speeds.  Not bad for the price IMO...
